another gamegear to repair and this one appears completely dead.
when the power switch is on I hear a buzzing noise through the speaker, sounds like electricity arcing but probably isn't I guess.
the power LED doesn't come on, nothing appears on the LCD
I replaced caps and nothing changed.
any ideas??

I should also say the power and audio boards are definitely fine. I've tried them in other gamegears.

check for shorts using a multi meter. The LED isn't lit so something is shorting. Check all of your caps and make sure theyre all good, sometimes a defective one can get into a batch of new ones. Check all of your solder points and see if you havnt accidentally bridged anything.

thanks illusionofmana, I didn't find anything but I had a hunch it was the transformer so I swapped it from a donor board and now this baby fires up.... but no audio from the speaker (headphones work fine) then I noticed the + leg of c7 had come away from the audio board. installed jumper wires from the cap to pin 1 of the speaker connector and r6 and now it works perfectly! yay!
the leg had come away because the pad was corroded (cap juice). I've seen a few with corroded pads there, so leaving this info here in case anyone else has this issue in future.
