VU meter (I need an artist...)
Post Posted: Fri Jun 21, 2019 1:45 pm
Anyone feels artistic enough to draw a nice VU meter (like one of these)?
Basically I need to put 4 on screen, with some space around them so I'd say they should be max around 100x80 or so...

What does this have to do with the SMS?

Maybe it's for something running on the SMS, like an audio player?

The algorithm for actually drawing VU meters is quite tricky - it's not just a peak level. But if you don't need that then fair enough...

How are you going to draw the needle?

I could probably craft this for you. Im curious about the needle though, any extra info you can give me on size or possibly number of frames?

well, since my idea was to create a very simple thing I guess a needle that has 10 position between min (-32 db) and max (0 db) would suffice, and probably we don't need more than that - size proportioned to UV display.

at least until anyone suggest a real UV meter - then it'll be troubles ;)

edit: if we need something more complex I'm going to see if I can create needles on the fly

For the record, the link in the first post doesn't work as intended because of the anchor (I guess you posted from a mobile phone?), here is the intended page, and here is a direct link to the picture as well, I don't think it's worth uploading by the attachment fairy anyway, those are just generic VU meters.

There are certain softwares which display graphical VU meters, by the way. Perhaps they can be used as a starting point, having the graphic already in a bitmapped format. I seem to remember Simulink being one of those softwares, and its VU meter looked pretty good, but it's been more than a decade since I last touched Simulink, so feel free to double check.

I assume he needs it for an SMS program though. His link also worked properly for me on desktop using firefox.

Of course he needs one for the SMS, I merely suggested to look into one which is already in bitmap format instead of a picture of a real one. The one from Simulink probably uses too many colors and whatnot, but it would be a starting point if someone wanted to trace over it or something, instead of drawing it from scratch. Since I'm not an artist I assumed it would be easier to use an already "pixelated" image as a reference. I'm sorry if my assumption is wrong.

And I can confirm that the link opens the article instead of the media page, which is hinted to be the actual intended target because of the anchor.

It looks like you missed both of my points. This is why I rarely post anymore.

Perhaps I assumed you meant just drop an unaltered bitmap from a VU app into an SMS program so I was a little put off by your suggestion. As for the link yea I see now, I more or less just interpreted your first comment about it as "broken" from some reason.
No harm intended.

About the VU meters, I just didn't want to 'borrow' anything existing, that's why I asked if somebody could draw one for me.
About the link, I'm sorry if it doesn't work in your browser. I'm on Vivaldi on Linux and I suppose that if it doesn't work in a lesser browser/system that means it's time to upgrade. :P
