[Homebrew game] Flight of Pigarus

So, I made another game. It took me a little longer than expected, but now it's finally complete.

It's a well-known fact that games which feature ninjas or flying pigs are 100% more awesome than games which feature neither. While my two previous games had plenty of ninja content, the piggu side of things has been woefully neglected. Until now. The new game is finally going to wrong this right.

The game is a score-attack shoot'em-up, which means that the main goal is to score as many points as you can within a strict time limit. The game saves the highest score for each of its modes. Additionally, replays of the runs that led to those highscores are saved, so you can watch them later and see where you might be able to improve.

Controls should be mostly self-explanatory: D-pad moves the player character, one button shoots (hold down for rapid autofire), the other one can be used to adjust the player's movement speed.

Tom, kusfo, and vingazole were awesome as always and once again provided translations for the manual.
A big thank you also goes out to Calindro, psidum, Tom, sverx and Ghegs for testing the game and giving invaluable feedback.

So without much further ado, here it is: Flight of Pigarus. Enjoy!

As usual, excellent work Kagesan !
Full ASM, I presume ?

Funny thing, i've made a little compilation of Bara Buru & Bruce Lee (with a little menu), 2 weeks ago... i'll add this one on it ^^

Well, that looks ridiculously good. Are you sure you didn't accidentally write a Mega Drive game?

(We can give you more quota, also feel free to deep link the images as they are on-site.)

As I already said, this is another masterpiece, 10/10 would play again.

Also, I just noticed I forgot to translate the "Game Over" heading in the manual, whoops :(

This is great. Another five levels or so, and I'd have paid (well, I'd have badgered my mum into paying) retail pricing for it in 1993!

Yes. That's what I know and that's what I'll stick to. I wouldn't say it couldn't be done any other way, but it sure would take a much better programmer than I am.

LOL, I am pretty sure.

It would be great to know more about the development process, and how you've made the accompanying materials like the manual. The attention to detail is really good, I can usually find fault but not today :) And of course, why not open source? Nobody ever reads that anyway...

Finally, you really need to hook up with one of those guys who can make physical copies, I'm sure you could make many people happy to own one.

WoW how fast It is! I suppose the mix of assembly and lack of tilemap collisión checking does the work. Will play and check this afternoon... isnit a Caravan like shmup? One point: Sprite and tilemap errors in my emulator (masteremu) in android, which seems to be a genesis sms mode like emulator.

Physical Edition???

Really nice game, amazing control, graphics, seems a Mega Drive Game.

Personally i prefer a shmup with classic levels, no time, but it is original and i will enjoy with it.

With that graphics do you think about a RPG game? or Mercs style game with 2 players?

How many time you take to created it?

Is that the Sonic font?
If you want a Dutch translation give me a shout (or was that already done? I haven't looked at the manual yet)

Simply amazing!
I tried it on Meka and it really feels like a Mega Drive game with those beautiful graphics!

The highscore chase within limited time is quite nice concept and makes the game even more addictive.

Sure, I can do a little writeup. Any points you're particularly interested in, so I can elaborate? As for the manual and stuff, there's no secret to it. They are done in InDesign with Illustrations created in Illustrator. Fortunately, my day job profession gives me access to those tools.

Regarding sharing the source: I'd rather not. There are too many bits of code I'm frankly embarassed by.

I'd love to have a physical edition made, but, as far as I remember it, while there are several options for custom PCBs now, the problem with the cartridge shells is still unresolved, or isn't it?

law81 wrote

That would fit really well, I agree. However, at the moment I have no such plans.

Too long. I think my earliest files date back to two and a half years ago...

S.F wrote

Not intentionally, no. I created it from scratch. I agree it looks a bit similar, though. I guess there's only so many ways you can produce readable characters in 8x16 pixels.

Yeah - this is super awesome, Kagesan! Very well balanced, and über-polished. I did not even know I was missing out on flying pigs in my life, but Flight of Pigarus will surely scratch that itch in the times to come!

Everything is of course excellent, but I particularly like the music! It fits perfectly to the game's pace and really contributes to the overall cute'em-up feel. Also, I really like the 2 minute and 5 minute timers; it would surely have seemed strange to me back in the days, but it very well matches my gamerlife now: Short bursts of retro joy!

My current hiscore for 2 min. is 11960.

I gave it a try yesterday on a 2-minute run, and I can only add to the chorus... it's excellent! The time-limited play perfectly suits my tastes these days, and really puts the emphasis on finding strategies to get just a little higher score. Thank you very much for sharing it with us.

I also like law81's suggestion... let's have a friendly competition for the high score! I don't have any expectation that I'll be anywhere near the top of the leaderboards, but it will be great fun to try!

Of course I do encourage a little highscore competition. ;)
One hint: To go for the really high scores, you not only need to play strategically (especially at the bosses), you also need to get all the secret bonuses. There are three types of those, and the hints section in the manual points you at how to get them.

My goal is to not die before I run out of time, getting a high score is secondary for now...

Development info I'm interested in:

- Graphics and sound, did you do then all yourself? I guess so...
- What inspired the design
- How you structured the code, to scale up to a whole game
- Considerations for the sprite limit and memory limits
- Considerations for the player movement speed - for ono I put in inertia to capture an analogue feel, this seems more simple?
- Is enemy movement bespoke code or scripting?
- What did you not add? Ideas you didn't get to or that didn't pan out?
- What considerations did you follow for the manual and cover work? Could you maybe publish some templates for others to build on, as the standard is generally poor :) although at the same time, expensive Adobe tools are expensive...

For me, all my source is embarrassing but I do release it all in order to at least preserve it. Also for meaningless internet points on GitHub :)

Maybe we can do a international or interforum competition if you are interested, so you can play and post the score here and i can update the ranking in the spanish forum with your nick and smspower .

Do you want to play?

I'm sure many would be interested in how you handled a few things:
- how you do 'infinite' vertical scroll (and how you stored such a 'tall' map)
- how you handled collisions between so many bullets and enemies on screen at the same time
- how you saved the player's replay

It's not much of a score, but I have yet to beat the 2nd boss.

Fantastic game, by the way. Feels very Star Parodia (PCE-CD) inspired.

This game clearly deserve a physical edition!!! I really want one with the pig cover & the hilarious backcover text (reminds me Power Strike back cover, also funny)!!

I'm new here, just registered to comment this game that i've discovered today : Kagesan, this is a work of love and i really wanted you to know that i consider it on par with Soldier standart, more on the Compile side obviously.
But still this mix rocks. 5MIN mode really has what it takes to stay fresh, the quick-kill based gamedesign really is smart.

My personnal best (there still lots of margin, especially on5MIN mode!!!)

2MIN MODE : TOMaplan (shmupemall) 32.110pts
5MIN MODE : TOMaplan (shmupemall) 91.670pts

See ya soon.

I only wish that this could be come a full shooter game instead of time limited. Are there any plans for that sort of thing?

I've uploaded a new version for the people who experienced glitchy results screens because of insufficient SRAM support of their flashcarts or emulators. Gameplay-wise, the game is identical.

If you find any new bugs I may have introduced by fixing the glitch, let me know, please.

Edit: Doubting my own sanity, probably not a bug but I'm leave it here for now.

Minor bug report. Hope this makes sense.

1. Play 5 minute game and set new hi score
(do not press any buttons from this point onwards)
2. Game goes to title screen with cursor on 2 minutes game
3. Wait for music to end
4. Replay is 5 minutes replay
5. Wait for replay to end
6. Wait for music to end
7. Replay is 2 minutes replay
(steps 5,6,7 repeat until you start another game)

Also, it would be cool if the cursor highlighted the previously played game mode. I just want to keep playing the 5 minute game and moving the cursor down after every game becomes a very small annoyance.

What you describe should be literally impossible. The game has no way of knowing which mode you have played last, as at the end of each game or replay, it always restarts from zero, wiping the whole RAM in the process. Which mode a game or replay stars in depends solely on the position of the select piggy on the title screen.

Dear Kagesan,

i've got a question about this, on the first hint "reach for the stars".
In 5MIN mode i've found two of theses, for 1000 then 2000pts. I sense that there is one one the last quarter of 2MIN run, put i can't reach him properly...could you give me some clue about this peculiar spot? How many Stars in total?
Any answer will be helpfull! Thanks in anticipation.

Also, "Close both eyes at the same time" is nowehere to be found so far. I'll investigate further!

By the way, thanks you law81 for adding my scores!
I'm actually stuck within theses limits, but i don't give up yet!!

TOMaplan - 34.080pts - 13sec left (14 sec is reachable)

TOMaplan - 94.820pts - 15 sec left (5 more sec left seems manageable)

In one of my very first playthroughs, two of the circular enemies with the eye appeared at the same time somewhere in the upper 3 minutes of the 5 minutes mode, but that never happened again in any of my subsequent playthroughs. For the record, I didn't manage to kill both of them in time, so I can't know if such a bonus would have been awarded, but I've been wondering the same thing ever since.

@TOMaplan: Those are some very impressive scores! You beat my own personal best in 2min mode (32,010) and you are very close to my personal record in 5min mode (98,900). I'm sure once you have dicovered all the secrets, you'll be the first one to crack the 100K.

Speaking of which...

There are 5 stars in total, two in the first level, three in the second one. You can tell that you are hitting one when you see your bullets disappear for no apparent reason and you hear the same sound that's played whenever you hit one of the sturdier enemies.

Watch out for spots that look strangely empty, like small islands with nothing on them or pattern-like arrangements of small trees with gaps in them. Pay close attention to the screen edges, too.

Ah, that's the trickiest bonus to pull off, and it's hard to give any more hints without spoiling the secret altogether. Let's just say that Tom is on the right track ...
