For almost a decade we've been saying this, repeatedly telling people in threads or in PM, and fixed countless posts manually. I'm making a thread link so I can link people to an explanation everyone can refer to.

Whenever possible, PLEASE AVOID POSTING LINKS TO EXTERNALLY HOSTED PICTURES.
PLEASE TRY USING THE ATTACHMENT SYSTEM.

When you post an externally hosted picture, it only comes with the guarantee that IT WILL DISAPPEAR.

We strive to be a useful INFORMATIONAL and PRESERVATION website. Contents are meant to be useful for future us and future other people. You'll agree that in this context, posting something that will self destruct on a preservation website is quite wrong.

When you post e.g. a link to an important auction/site with something very rare, try take the time to save the picture and attach them to your post. We'll raise your attachment quota as needed.

Now, we understand that some users are not technically minded or that posting from some devices can make it harder to post pictures. If you are not able to attach the files for some reasons, please state so. It'll be a gentle suggestion for another users to try gathering the pictures and attaching them to a following post if they are valuable

The internet is a black hole. Many sites have been dying and most forum threads all over the world have lost their pictures. SmsPower is 21 year old and the fact that so many of our threads are complete and we're hosting contents from other website that would be otherwise lost is the continuous result of everyone's effort. Please help SmsPower stay like this :)

Thank you!

(PS: It is ok to post link to other files linked on smspower.org obviously)

(PS: Also, when posting image files that are coming straight from your camera/phone, consider resizing the JPG file down. They typically come unnecessarily enormous both in resolution and in file size. If the picture is not important for its visual quality and fidelity, it can probably be resized a little.)

This is what broken threads looks like: (I am trying to fix them now. Btw I highly recommend https://www.voidtools.com to find files on your drives). We have hundreds of missing pictures on the site.

One project I've never got around to is a real attachment fairy, which would find links to hosted photos or auctions and attach photos. Unfortunately this would be very hard to maintain because the hosts change all the time (and often try to redirect image links to web pages with ads, because they understandably want to make money). Until then, maybe we should consider a JavaScript reminder if you enter a URL which matches some pattern list.

However, it's worth considering that it is actually quite tricky to download images and then attach them, we are relatively technical users and find this easy - although sometimes it can still be a challenge, especially on fruity mobile devices.

Correct, you are right. I'm tweaking the post above to reflect this.

In this topic about a Sports Pad clone, a user complained that they could not upload a photo as an attachment because the account had run into its upload quota. Is this likely to be a problem for other users?

We apply a quota to limit abuse, but increase this for anyone who needs it once that is no longer an issue. We could probably do with a resize script for people who upload multi megabyte digital photos though.
