Wonderboy in Monster World - Sram save hack + color restoration
Post Posted: Sun Aug 27, 2017 6:18 pm
Hi,
my last sram hack is for Wonderboy in Monster World and his incredible password (45 cars long...damn)

- Continue auto load your save (saved in password house).
If no save is present, launch new game.

- Every palettes has been modified (to be less ugly), some color cycling and sprites (color index)

Screenshots original/updated :

few more screenshots

- Auto detect pad type at start (MD or MS)
if a MD pad is detected, Start works as Pause button
(thanks to BcnAbel76 and Vingazole)

- Checksum already corrected

Enjoy,
Ichigo.

Eyh!!! Great!!!!

Very good game, and nice enhancements.

SRAM, Palette hacking, and MD Pad autodetection.

I think I made a new standard hack, it can be attatched to most games for play with MS Pad or MD Pad

Thankyou for share Ichigo ;) Nice!!!

Those palette enhancements are great. I always wondered why they chose such garish colours for the game.

O. M. G. that looks nice!

I've always avoided this game because it looks hideous, like some kind of knock off fake unlicenced thingy. Think Super Mario World for NES.

This is sweet. Your work is brilliant.

Very impressive.

FYI: the SMS version of Wonder Boy in Monster World wasn't made by Westone. I asked Mr Nishizawa and he doesn't know who made it. In his words "I don't know. I think Sega has ordered a development company somewhere."

I had a mail last year from someone asking that question as they heard it might have been done by a British team, but he doesn't seem to have evidence (so treat it as just another internet rumor until we get evidence). I sent them the link to this thread so they can elaborate what they heard. Looking at the code may lead some more information?

The comment arose when "Black Tiger" on the PCFX forums stated the following in this thread: http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=9249.msg461070#msg461070

Wonderboy in Monsterland = Monster World I

The Genesis game called "Wonderboy V" or "Wonderboy in Monster World" is Monster World III. This game received a good port for SMS by a Western developer, but it makes the biggest problem of the original even worse: the tiny range of your weapon. Dynastic Hero is version of this game.

I then asked him to provide some evidence (if nothing else, to get credits added on SMSPower or GDRI). He was not able to justify this.

I've belatedly added this to the site:

https://www.smspower.org/Hacks/WonderBoyInMonsterWorld-SMS-SRAMPadRestoration-Mo...

So it shows up on the game page:

https://www.smspower.org/Games/WonderBoyInMonsterWorld-SMS

Volunteers to help us maintain this site information are welcome.

Great hack nice choice of colours.

One thing I noticed is that the pause button gets stuck if you try to pause then unpause during a boss fight. It takes several taps of the start button to resume play properly. Otherwise it brings up the status screen just fine at any other stage.
