Whodunit: I.T.LPosted: Sun May 21, 2017 11:34 pm
Brought to you by GDRI :: Game Developer Research Institute
Developer I.T.L's website has several unnamed Sega 8-bit games listed:
*One (1) action game for the Master System
*One (1) simulation game for the Game Gear
*Eight (8) sports game for the Game Gear
Looking at the credits and comparing them to other I.T.L games, the one Master System title has to be Rainbow Islands. The Game Gear games are going to be a little harder to pick out.
Sound designer Kenichi Kamio worked on a number of games for I.T.L, and he also worked on a few Game Gear games — Dunk Kids ("Street Hoopers"), SD Gundam: Winner's History, mostly baseball games. Unfortunately, most of these don't have credits, but they do provide a good starting point.
Dunk Kids has credits, but they're mostly pseudonyms that don't turn up anywhere else. Of all the baseball games, only "Tatakae! Pro Yakyuu Twin League" has credits. These check out.
The next step is to compare code. In this case, we can just look at Maxim's old page of results from CloneSpy, a ROM comparison program. World Series Baseball '95, Pro Yakyuu GG League '94, Dunk Kids, and SD Gundam Winner's History are in one group; World Series Baseball and Majors Pro Baseball are in another group.
That gives us five sports games. I don't believe the first GG League, Hyper Pro Yakyuu '92, and Tatakae! Pro Yakyuu Twin League were available at the time, so they don't turn up in the results, but they are very similar. The Pro Yakyuu '91 and Clutch Hitter are very different, so I think those can be eliminated. That's eight sports games.
That leaves the simulation game. SD Gundam Winner's History seems to be the best fit. It doesn't really "look" like an I.T.L game, but Kamio was involved, and it turns up in the aforementioned CloneSpy group.

Samples from the baseball games left in the others...

|Seems like they were mostly reusing the same samples since the '80s.|

|A new code comparison was done, and all the Game Gear games check out. Clutch Hitter also came up, but not to any significant extent. (On recent reexamination, I suspected Clutch Hitter was an I.T.L or Act Japan game.)|
