Game Gear: Would this be useful for anyone?
![]() Last edited by dreamscape on Tue Oct 27, 2015 1:54 pm; edited 6 times in total |
I'm going to start repairing a lot of Game Gear's soon as a sort of restoration project for the many, manyyyy broken Game Gear's these days.
I was just curious if this idea would be helpful to any of you or the group as a whole. I plan to document all the details of the Game Gear's i repair onto this (very) old pc giving it a purpose once again as well as documenting a lot of data for the Game Gear's I repair. As I'm stripping them down anyway to recap them I thought I might as well document main board serials, case serial numbers, VAx number, single or twin ASIC type of board and all that good stuff. Would anyone or the group as a whole here find this information useful? |

I think it's a good idea. I can't say that I would find it useful at present because I don't know how to solder (I have a £10 bargain bin soldering kit lying around that I'm too timid to use) but other people might be able to make use of the information at some point in the future.
Is there any particular reason why you're using that Amstrad? I love old computers but is there anything about this one that makes it especially suited to this task? |

Nothing what so ever. I just have one sitting around that has nothing to do in life haha! Plus i love that classic green screen it would look great in my workshop. Can people let me know what information i should store that would be most useful and i will begin compiling the list. If it is of use to people then consider it done! |

Is there a diagram anywhere of what the chips are? I know the ASIC chips but not all, I presume the other 2 (on a twin ASIC board) on the left are RAM and BIOS or something ?
I will list and fully document any and all information you guys will find helpful I'm here to help where i can this is a hobby for me and I find Game Gear's really interesting. Just need to know what chip is what for documentation purposes. I've got 5 Game Gear's coming already and intend to do this for a long time so let the fun begin! |

The service manuals should be a pretty good guide where they match the consoles you have. | |

Thanks Capt.2110 I think I might rename this thread the Game Gear serials thread or something and I will edit the original post to just include all the serial numbers and add them as we go.
I've got my first new batch of Game Gears today ready for repair in my little SEGA hospital: ![]() Can you all confirm that the parts highlighted in red on these pictures are the info you want? if you want more please edit the pictures and upload them with additional circles or whatever you want. ![]() ![]() ![]() B0073875, VA1?, 837-7398-01, Model HGG-3210 P20172831 VA1, 837-7996, Model 2110-50 |

Yeah, that would be good. Also, if you want to decode the serial numbers, we can assist each others projects:

If you can tell me what chip is what i can start documenting those numbers too but right now I'm unsure what they actually are so not sure what to name them. |

My Amstrad is all setup and ready to begin logging serials!
Me and Capt. 2110 are already logging serials from various sources. Progress page can be found here: http://www.smspower.org/Development/GameGearSerialNumbers |

Cool!
Also, I just realized this. That's an Amstrad PCW. It uses a 4 MHz Z80 CPU. Random fact of the day. |

Here's another.
Quite a strange one... old style sound board and serial label, 2 ASIC board and bubble screen cover. ![]() ![]() Regardless though... it is now recapped and saved :) ![]() From now one i will PM Capt direct with serials etc as i don't want to clog up the forum with endless posts. |
