Everdrive + VGMPlayer?
Post Posted: Sat Nov 08, 2014 10:59 pm
I just obtained a Master System Everdrive and I've been trying to play VGM files on it.

I've been trying Maxim's player 0.45 with a few VGM files but the resulting roms do not work correctly on my system, either the graphics are badlly glitched (but plays fine) or it crashes. These roms seem to work OK in emulators.

Any ideas? Is there something extra I need to do with the resulting rom? US Master System and Everdrive firmware v8, btw.

It might not work well on NTSC, I only ever tested on PAL.

Oh, hey Maxim!

The PAL games I've tried appear to work OK. Are there any VGM player roms available for download that you've tested and confirmed on hardware?

I think it's probably an issue with the player itself, I tested it only on PAL hardware which is less restrictive on the graphical corruption front. If I could dig up the source then it might be fixable. I'm not aware of any other players for the Master System.

I'm sorry for necroing this, but I'm facing the exact same problem. One of the reasons I bought the Everdrive was to test the music I'm making with Furnace on the real hardware, but I get the exact same results as the OP: one song just crashed, the other had bad graphics but played fine. I'm using a Brazilian Master System (Alex Kidd BIOS) and a Chinese everdrive.

One thing to note is that Everdrive does not correctly load "strange" size ROMs that are not either 32KB or a multiple of 64KB. A typical uncompressed VGM file + player stub will need to be padded to the next multiple of 64KB to load properly.

Yeah, I've done this to the ones that didn't load, too bad the graphics are still corrupted, any clue on what could be changed to fix this?

I have a few fixes already done, slightly disrupted by someone stealing my computer a week ago. I didn’t set up an automatic build yet so there’s no ROMs to test yet.
