How do you become an admin?

I don't want to be one(Well... that's a lie). I just want to know how you pick one.
|
Posted: Sat Jul 12, 2014 12:43 am |
You create the site. Then you pick whoever you want.
|
Posted: Sat Jul 12, 2014 2:03 am |
Who created this site? | |

Bock-bock-bock-boooock, I believe. |

Ask yourself these questions:
What do you know about website administration? What would you do as an admin? Why do you want to be an admin? These are rhetorical questions. You don't need to voice your answers. Just think about them. The best way to become an admin is not asking to be one. I don't want to sound harsh, Believe me: it's not my intention. But let me tell you that "How do I become an admin" is a newbie question asked by many new users in every community. I know what I'm talking about. When the site is in need of more admins, a public announcement will be made and you'll have your chance. Meanwhile, prove you can be one. Be helpful and show the community how knowledgeable you are. I'm not saying that you are not doing that already. You seem to be a nice person. Just ask yourself what can you do for the community. Patience. Knowledge. Wisdom. Those are the keys. |

There is no step 2. Sometimes we could do with web developers, and doing that gets you in. For the forum we may one day need moderators, but for now we manage OK. |

Odd, the same thread popped up on a forum I moderate just this month too. I can't vouch for this site, but on my other one I do not think there is a moderator or admin who was not regular member for more than two or three years before they were considered. Knowing the community, owners and being quite the stand up guy helps I would assume. If there is no need for more staff, then they won't be looking however.

The question is more "what are you offering to the site?"
The site need content creators to fill in maps, screenshots, articles, music packs, translations, etc. We also could do with skilled web developers (effectively Maxim has been doing the vast majority of the web work in the past few years). I can't think of anything else we'd need at the moment but feel free to suggest something. |

I have the original Game Gear box, ac adapter box, and car adapter box. How do I scan them? They aren't in the best shape, however, I do not see any scans of them.
|
Posted: Sat Jul 12, 2014 5:13 pm |
You... use a scanner.
There's plenty of "unskilled" work to do, for example OCR on manuals and magazine reviews, taking game screenshots, making sprite images, recording game credits... and of course my scans backlog, which I haven't really been able to let go because I'm quite fussy about that. |

Oh, you were right. Also, the current scan of the Game Gear manual looks pretty bad. I might as well drop this here too. |
|
|
Posted: Sat Jul 12, 2014 7:47 pm |
That's not the box I have. I have the US box.
|
Posted: Sat Jul 12, 2014 7:59 pm |
Then you're still right :P
The more, the better. There were no scans yesterday, there will be 2 tomorrow. |

I really hope scans of game manuals will be added as well.
It is very easy to find roms online, but scans of the manuals are much rarer. It is usually possible to understand the game mechanics by playing, but reading the manual first makes the experience much nicer. |

But we do have game manual scans. For example, take a look at the Sonic scans page. If you have wiki access, create the page for the upload with the multi-image template, upload the images and set :ScanOf: to Manual We even have a manual scanning guide |

Sorry for being unclear. I mean by adding manuals of the games for which the manual is missing
|
Posted: Sat Jul 12, 2014 9:07 pm |
Scanning manuals require a lot of time. I was up to do that, years ago, but I assumed it wasn't needed and I never did so. Now I can't do it anymore since I recently sold all my games. I do have something else which I can scan, maybe I will.
|

That's what I'm saying :)
You can scan a game manual and upload it. You must use the multi-image template. In :ScanOf: enter Manual Here's an example: GP Rider Game Manual |

Sorry for not undestanding. I understand now.
It would be cool, but checking which games have a scanned manual and which don't will take some time. |

You forgot a b. | |

Right. I corrected it.
I created the Game Gear scans page and added the Japanese GG Box. It's in bad shape and it's not the best scan, so if anyone has a box in better condition and can do better scans, feel free to replace my files. Please add your GG box and manual scans here |

You missed the existing Sega Game Gear page...

:giant facepalm: Sorry. I'll correct later today or tomorrow morning. Edit: Corrected (thanks Maxim for clarifying). |

I don't have a good fully functioning scanner, but these are what I have.
Game Gear: http://msxresources.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/gamegear-box.jpg?w=300&h=271 AC Adapter: http://shop.bresoftware.com/thumbnail.asp?file=assets/images/gg-ac-adapter-orig.... Car Adapter: https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR_h3ff6kwEXGXhAEwR2Ft1jDCc... I'm working on fixing my old scanner. |

I fixed it and I'm adding my scans now(in theory).

Most of them seem rotated in the wrong direction? (whereas the thumbnails are ok)
|
Posted: Wed Aug 06, 2014 3:54 pm |
Yes, how do I fix it? I fixed them later on my laptop, but I can't fix it on the website.
|
Posted: Wed Aug 06, 2014 4:13 pm |
It's probably rotation data in the EXIF tags, which can be removed losslessly using the right tools. The thumbnailer probably ignores it...

Shouldn't there be "US" somewhere in the URL?
|
Posted: Thu Aug 07, 2014 6:11 am |
Yes :) In fact, I strongly suspect this is not the only US box variant, so you may as well pre-empt there being more and make it US-A (so we can add US-B etc).
|
Posted: Thu Aug 07, 2014 1:13 pm |
It's not the only box for US, but I don't have the others. I would be happy to fix all of the stuff I didn't do right, but how do I fix them?
|
Posted: Thu Aug 07, 2014 1:52 pm |
It's a bit weird in the first place, but I guess your tools are producing JPEG files which are not as simple as they might be, especially in terms of embedded rotation information. I suggest using different software. Always save scans in PNG so you can come back to them later if there's any issue.
For these, I will fix them myself, probably just by rotating/cropping/resizing/recompressing them, as they are a bit in need of adjustment anyway. |

How to change the filename and URL
First you change the name of the attachments. 1. Go to one of the pages you created (for example http://www.smspower.org/Scans/SegaGameGear-Hardware-BoxBottomAndTop) 2. Click on Attach (at the top of the page). 3. At the bottom of the page, you'll find the files attached to this page. Click the R icon next to one of the files (for example SegaGameGear-Hardware-BoxBottomAndTop-thumb.jpg) and rename it to include US-A- (for example SegaGameGear-Hardware-US-A-BoxBottomAndTop-thumb.jpg). You must rename all the attached files with the same pattern. Then you change the name of the page: 1. Go to the page you want to rename (for example http://www.smspower.org/Scans/SegaGameGear-Hardware-BoxBottomAndTop) 2. Click on Rename (at the top of the page) 3. Enter the new name for the page (Scans.SegaGameGear-Hardware-US-A-BoxBottomAndTop) 4. Click Move. |

Thanks, Maxim.
TinchoDJ, I've renamed 2 of 5 so far. Thanks for all the help! http://www.smspower.org/Scans/SegaGameGear-Hardware-US-A-BoxBottomAndTop http://www.smspower.org/Scans/SegaGameGear-Hardware-US-A-BoxBack |

Note that the Sega logos in your box have a "TM". When editing the pages change TM to true or check the TM checkbox when viewing the page.
This is important for variations. Some boxes have a TM, others a SM, o include a slogan like "Now there are no loimits", etc. |
