Raw scans will also be bigger, which can be an issue for us.

I can temporarily host the raw scans as long as it's not going to push like 100GB a month I'll be in good shape.

Maybe it'd be better us spending the effort to do the right thing and first release the scans nicely rotated/cropped at a decent size, because that'll be the files that people will share. ? omp can upload them unprocessed somewhere for us to look at it ?

Keen.

It has been suggested I do it at 600DPI .png file type.

Agreed, unless there's really small text/detail in which case bump up the resolution. Also turn off any sharpening filters etc.

That's what I was thinking. I am just a little impatient and want to get a peek at it before it goes "public"

This is one of those things that will definitely be worth the wait. :)

Interesting, it seems like he has the originals and is just selling photocopies then. I guess that's one way to make money.

Then we all overpaid :( I notice he added a mention that they are photocopies to the original auctions on the day they ended, which we may not have noticed.

Does it matter what are "originals" or not ? People probably received dodgy prints in the first place. We can't go back in time either, to be fair we didn't pay that much of an absurd amount apart from the GG VA2 one.

Yes, but each generation of copying loses quality and I thought these were as clear as we could get, and the only ones available. Still, I'm confident we can get everything we want from them.

I doubt there is any meaningful losses on the bits that matter (schematics particularly)

Agreed, and the information is pretty much priceless regardless of the source so it ended up being a good deal. Going by the auction photos the clarity seems rather good too. Should be exciting to see the final scans.

I heard he had multiple copies as he offered someone on another forum a "2nd chance" offer. Really blatently obvious he did anyway....

I think it's a shame the only time you hear from this dude (on any forum i have seen) is when he is peddling his wears.

The person i mentioned was contacted within 5 minutes of auction ending (saturn manual).

Mine arrived today!

Europe Manual.

Firstly the copy looks first generation on certain parts, some of the schematics are harder to read, some are perfect. Probably because usage of certain parts was required more than others, copied more.

The manual is split into different parts.

1. Block Diagram
2 Assembly Drawing
2-1. General Reference List
2-2. Assembly List
2-3. Procedure of Disassembly and Assembly
3. Spare Parts List
4. accessories List
5. PCB Repair Procedure
6. Soft and Hard Check Manual

A4 size and larger for schematics. Not only this, there are hand written parts in English regarding certain procedures and explanations.

The Schematics are genuine copies of the original Sega designs, some look like update alterations, some are revisions.

Part numbers, spares, every component listed.

Yes there is. A tree test procedure. And there is another text for testing specific components first for operation. Part of the hand written text also tells how to test certain parts first.

Some of it is very basic. Turn on, does light come on? And so on.

Any good stuff like if light does not come on probable causes Capacitor # etc, bad VM regulator #...

Also, it says you are in York. Are you in York, PA, USA? If so I am very close to you, about 30 minutes.

I haven't had time to read through it all yet, but there are parts where it says test part A, if component B does not work.

York Uk I'm afraid, about 30 hours away :)

Ok guys my father inlaw has these. I estimate i can get them thursday night at the latest. I could have gotten them on friday but the father inlaw forgot to bring it home.

Also been a delay due to our local floods roads being fucked up etc (live in Queensland) and that we (wife and i) are in the "sell a car and buy a new car" phase. Going to miss the V35 Skyline but need something more "practical", we got a Mitsubishi Outlander.....yawn.

Red flag!

Omp it would be great if we could get one manual available asap and increase the news spread that there will be made available (everyone can help). Gerry_Man just bought some of them again on eBay before stumbling on this thread... though there is a good news in think, because he also got that GG manual that we missed and may want to help, unless Gear for Games wants to? At any rate we are moving forward :)

My Mother inlaw was nice enough to drop these off today. Good news most of it is readable, allthough some of the board scans are no good and the schematics....well we'll have to see as where the paper has folded the letter are worn away.

I won't be at work tomorrow but I will start scanning these Thursday. I have said I will start with the Saturn one as these guys put heaps of faith in me. 8Bit will be next so I can ship these to Bock.

Well, something certainly didn't like that. My Firefox browser crashed after opening that link... Maybe its a size issue, how big is that PDF?

It's a 17MB PDF on DropBox, and works for me in Chrome. I'm starting to make it into a more web friendly format.

Ok people

I have started scanning the Saturn manual. I have tried PDF 600dpi and the file is quite sizeable. If I scan it as a TIFF, the file size is a lot smaller, but is not as clear but still readable.

So we going for file size "as best as" we can get and stuff the file size?

Unfortunately things like PCB board scans are, to be honest, shit.

If you have the bandwidth, full quality is the way to go and we'll process down for the web. PDF or TIFF don't matter as they're just containers. 600dpi 1bpp may suffice for most and will compress pretty well, but greyscale will be better. 24bpp is not necessary. PNG can be compressed better in dedicated software if you have a lot of CPU power.

I've seen a lot of very legible schematics done in 4-bit (16 color) grayscale. If that isn't sufficient, surely 8bpp is?

I laugh whenever someone scans or saves greyscale stuff as 24-bit rgb (if not 32-bit rgba). I agree that 8-bit greyscale png would be the best option for the master copy, yes, while 2- or 4-bit greyscale png can be useful to provide an alternative smaller file for those who want to save some bandwidth... The problem with 2- and 4-bit greyscale png is that it requires the grey levels to use specific values, in which case a generic 2- or 4-bit indexed png might be a better option if the brightness distribution isn't uniform.

Unfortunately no png on the printer/scanner at work. I have pdf, tiff, jpeg, xml and another but no png. To be honest i showed what i scanned to a fellow worker/slacker and he (other than going wtf are you up to now) saw very little difference between the original photocopy and the pdf. He said the tiff had marginally thicker lines. I think i will upload what i have (will be creating my own drop box) and let people decide.

If you guys are running out of space and need it temporarily hosted somewhere for the large scans I can offer you some space on my FTP and then I can upload it to my webspace. Whatever we need.

Wow, great stuff! This fills in some blanks from the 315-5246 pinout I had here:

http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10098

* Pin 16 is TO (test output?), normally left unconnected. Didn't know what it was.
* Pin 14 isn't really ground, but TI (test input?) that is grounded for normal operation.
* Pin 26 (VREF, seemed to saturate the RGB output towards white) is called "H1OUT"
* Pin 25 (BURST, indicates color burst) looks like it says "CS1" but I think it's "CB1".

Mainly figuring which pins were the test pins was of interest to me.

I love that the code-name of the SMS 2 is "M4 Jr.", and it's interesting the VDP has a Yamaha part number (315-5124 as YM2602).

Do you guys mind if I leave my links up?

How did you get it to retain clarity whilst reducing size? I tried reducing file size in Adobe pro and it came out shit lol!
