Unfortunately they are a bit pricey and my finance aren't the greatest at the moment. I would chip in half of the cost if people are interested in donating the rest so it could get fully scanned. *EDIT* January 16: I am gathering pledge and received a good amount already. Handling the bid on all 5 SMS/GG items. More pledges are very useful. Will gather the money after auction ends. *EDIT* January 18.: All ready for bidding, alarm clocks set etc. Still collecting donation pledges (please PM). ! Attaching auctions pictures in subsequent posts! |

The guys on Sega-16 are talking the same. As in everyone (well not EVERYONE) chips in and then receiver scans and uploads.
Now this guy is in Australia as well (same as me). I have access to A3 scanners. I added it up and the manuals (there are duplicates of a few things so I didn't count these) as they are now is $710AU sans shipping. I could grab one or two, but which two? I would definately grab the SMS2 as that has a special spot as it was my first console. *edit To start the ball rolling I have started to bid on the SMS2 and the 2 Game Gear manuals. Shh Don't tell the wife lol! |

It's always a bad idea to start bidding in early :)
Maxim & I have decided we are happy to be buying them all (the Sega 8-bit) stuff so count on me for a bid if you get outbid. |

Well my train of thought is if we be reasonable about it and get a couple of forums involved, we can rise together and get these. They can be shared equally so everybody benefits.
I am really hoping this works out and not someone buys the lot and keeps for themselves. Essentially i am asking that no one here bids on what i have bid on as it would be pointless. I will be scanning and sharing, i go to work early when no one is there to scan.... to easy. So far there is a thead here and sega-16. Thinking of doing the same at assembler forums in the sega section. |

Mate better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, every bit helps.
I will be starting a fund raising thing on Sega-16 and Assembler. If you like I can include here since I have already started. |

Please do. This stuff is so important. It could potentially open up doors to people like me who have a good basic understand of electronics, but don't know all the intimate details... This could really help someone like me repair some of the trickier broken consoles.

I didn't know there were 16-bit manuals in there, too. You can probably contact the people from Sonic Retro too then... I'll link their main administrator to this thread.

The seller is a member here, so why don't we ask him to offer photocopies for a fair price (if not free) to the site? Of course, this must be done behind the scenes.
I reckon they will end high enough with so much attention through all SEGA forums. There are many private collectors out there drooling over these manuals... |

Ok guys Have gone nuts and made an Excel spreadsheet of what manual, start price, expected price (I simply doubled the start price) and time ending. There is an average time ending gap of 2-5minutes. I will have to ammend the 16bit fund raiser as this (by simply doubling) could go for around $800. I am putting my money where my mouth is and paying for the SMS2 and the 2 GG manuals (not the TV one). I am also, tonight (about to leave for work) going to put up on ebay 3 modified consoles to further contribute to this. Consoles going up on ebay- Sega Master System 2-power on light, 50/60Hz switch, SAFE language switch, FM expansion board, 2 port pause mod, AV and s-video out. Sega Nomad-Modern LCD screen, region switch (manual), Reset (press start+mode), long life battery <<<as seen here on these forums. Atari 7800-AV modded These will be on a short auction to boost funds but people get the word out wherever forums you go. We need this stuff easily available! |

I'd suggest contacting the people at Sega Retro and Spritesmind in private and removing any public mentions of these auctions (including this topic), so the prices won't skyrocket.

Is there any kind of prioritizing about which manuals to get?
I think the 32X and both Game Gear ones have a lot of value, since we do so many GG repairs/modifications and the 32X internals are entirely unknown. Notice one manual is for the single-chip GG and the other is for the two-chip one. The Genesis ones for the post-VA0 systems are probably handy since none of the ASICs have documented pin assignments. The Saturn one might be interesting but we do have schematics for it already and a comprehensive set of developer's manuals. Likewise I've never heard of any outstanding repair/emulation issues for Mega CD, but the manuals could still be useful somehow. I have the feeling we have the SMS 1/2 totally figured out at this point. ;D |

Bock is keen for all the 8 bit stuff.
I have started bidding on the SMS2 and the 2 GG ones. I know who the bidder is for the Mega Drive 1 and MD IC service manuals (chap from Spritesmind). No idea on the Saturn one though. As above I have started a fund raising thing. Tonight I am putting on ebay a modifed SMS2 (including FM board). If I get the pics sorted I will also be putting up an AV modded Atari 7800 and modifed Sega Nomad. This will be a short auction to provide more funds. |

I have put up 2 of the 3 consoles to donate towards this.
Please no complaints etc I am doing this for the team lol! Sega Master System 2 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281049859785?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 Atari 7800 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281050184640?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 I listed the Atari first. It was removed due to the "piracy" thing, they claimed that it been "mod chipped, game enhancers or boot discs". I pointed out it had only had the video and sound improved. I then sent them links to other consoles that had been modded in a similar way. Hopefully they pull their heads in as I re-listed it. Edit Sega Nomad http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281050226140?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649[url] |

I checked some of the similar threads on other forums. I think showing empty donation buckets and handling too many things at once may not be giving the best overall impression of guarantee to win and this could lead to more "rogue" bids from individual people.
It would be good to clarify on those other forums that SMS Power is backing that for any Sega 8-bit components and we will win those auctions and put scans up. We're got a baseline expectation for bids but I don't think this should be made public. Any pledge is welcome (please pm) that we will collect fairly after the facts. omp and i are talking privately and we'll figure out what logistic make best sense to get the auctions won. The sega 8-bit ones are sufficiently separated I have no issue doing the upcoming bids if any. |

Charles, I think it would make it more complicated to try to handle this prioritization across all systems. Each community have different interests and different number of people who wants to puts their money where their mouth is. My only concern here are the Sega 8-bit manuals and I am leaving other systems to whatever competent community will manage to organize itself. My gut feeling order would be GG (both models), SMS 1, SMS 2, GG Tuner. As you say because the SMS is simpler to study. But regardless of this order I will attempt to get all of them. |

The 8bit chipin has been cancelled.
I have also removed the other 2 chipin links from here. **EDIT** Apart from my current MAX bids I will no longer have anything to do with bidding for the 8-bit manuals. I will however happily make a DONATION towards them. I will remove the links to my auctions if required. Cheers Pete |

It is a shame because with the low price of the other ones I could have put more on the first one, but there no way of knowing and I thought at this point that ~$270 would be enough.
There is a final one the TV Tuner coming in an hour, shouldn't end very high. |

Not to worry though, because I won it. Sorry had to outbid. But I service Game Gears for a living, had to have a manual! How will these manuals be displayed. Free for everyone, just members, not displayed? Once on the Internet the rarity becomes diluted and the worth is nothing. I'm happy to share the information, but not for the entire world! |

Your attitude right now is a total negation of what this community is about. I'm wishing you will come to your sense eventually.

I think you've got me all wrong! I'm not out to make money off the manual. At no point in this thread any mention was made that once the manuals were secured they would be copied and displayed.
If this is the case then fine. I will do the same. I just thought any one could download the file, print out and sell. Thus making the initial purchase worthless. Or does this not take presidency? Cost immaterial, just share. |

Won the GG TV Tuner one for ~$70
Thanks to FluBBa, Paul Baker, Maxim, omp, Maraakate for donations! There was more pledged than the final cost so I'll figure out a lower amount at pro-rata and will send an e-mail round, unless one of you is happy to go with the intended full pledge and spare others:) |

Sorry I meant from an admin point of view. If admin had said we are buying these for the forum, to be displayed for the world, then yes I would not have bid, I could have saved myself the money if it was readily available. My mistake sorry. My intention is not to upset the admin or the forum. Obviously this is a big win for SMS Power to have all these in one place. Once the manual is with me i would like to contribute it to here. |

I can see most of them ended in good hands :)
A shame it went for so high prices though T_T Can't wait for the scans :) |

We will certainly be devaluing our investment by scanning and publishing everything. I'd like to free them from images and make transformable text too - we might need help from knowledgeable people to proof read and redraw schematics in modern software perhaps.

Sent my share over, OMP as soon as you scan in the SMS1 even before you touch them up link me immediately!

I can only scan these at a high rate, I am not sure if I can edit them to clean them up?
I think we will need to wait for me to get them, scan them and see how they turn out. |
|
![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
Cleaning up is fairly simple, if I can find the time. So long as the scans are decent quality, we can always reprocess them later.
![]() ![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
Yeah, I think we should just put up the scans unprocessed as soon as possible and if they need cleaning, rotating, etc. reupload it at a later date. |
