Just in time to conclude our summer of dumps, here's a final gift. We've released 60 dumps this summer, not bad I guess! :)

In our incessant obsessional quest for oddities we sometimes stumble on something special and we're happy to share it with you all. Unreleased games do not pop up very often in our hands (see the list) and today we've got one for the Master System!

Enough talk.. NBA Jam for the Master System !

This was developped by Iguana Entertainment in 1994, after the release of the Game Gear version from which it is a conversion of. Although the loss of colors of such GG>SMS conversion is to be expected (mostly to be noticed in interfaces), this version runs at full resolution and include a local two-players mode.

Thanks a lot to J for helping us uncover this game! Also see the other discussion thread about the original announce of finding this game. This find was really unexpected considering the owner didn't know about its content.

Note:
- The game is meant to run in PAL mode and may have visual issues (flickering) on a NTSC system. Due to its late development date, presumably the port was only targetting toward an European release.
- The ROM image doesn't have a valid Sega header and thus won't run unmodified with a western BIOS system. Patching the header is a trivial operation.

Im the programmer both game gear and PS1 versions of NBA JAM.. I did the MS conversion and it was finished, but we had the problem of the buttons.. The arcade and all other home conversion used the same 3 buttons.. But the MS only had two and we could not find a acceptable way of making it work so the game was shelved.


Good find coz i don't even have a copy of this..

Hi Chris!

Nice to see some programmer of that time! We really appreciate when someona that worked in that period explains facts that we can only guess.

One question, i remember playing the game gear version and it was using only two buttons, as i remember. Was the start button being used for something at playtime?

Yup, Start on the GG ver is the Turbo button.

Yeah i think we had to get permission to use the start button as a in game button from sega..

I was quite proud of nba jam te on the game gear.. i had a few months down time between games so i wrote tons of code to get TE working right.. The game uses bank switching to use a bigger cart. but i used this by writing the same code 4 times and bank switching the currently running code on the fly.. Meant code was very quick..

I miss writing assembly code.. I use c++ & c# these days..


Oh and there was never a version of TE on Master System.

Just came across this beauty! Nice work, Chris! I assume Rick Fox did the music conversion for this as with the other ports by Iguana.

Also, I am astonished this game has credits (unfortunately not for the development team). Enter this password (QH11K3X CX5Y2VQ) and use the following codes in Fusion to see the ending credits:
00C8E7:63, 00D4B5:63 (you have highest score), and 00CAC1:00 (timer is always 00:00)
