Game Gear 1MegaByte Memory interface using 315-5912 Mapper - Finally Working!!!

Hi everyone,

Well, I finally managed to get the SEGA 315-5912 Mapper IC interfaced to an AMD 8-MBit Flash chip.

The whole time during my previous attempts to get this mapper working... there was a bad connection on my Flash chip.
So I repaired the flaw and over a few hours today, I managed to properly map the required interface between the mapper IC and the flash memory chip.

As you all know there are only a few 8-MBit (1Megabyte) cartridges out there for the Game Gear.

Games like "Garfield", "Virtua Fighter Animation" and "Sonic Blast" are the ones I used during my research.

I have now confirmed the appropriate Pin connections for the SEGA 315-5912 memory mapper IC along with the accompanying SEGA 8-Mbit MASK ROM.

I have attached the updated pinout diagrams for these chips and I have also added the interfacing diagrams for the AMD AM29F800BB 8-MBit flash chip that I used.
If you follow the diagram connections you can easily fit this Flash chip into the GG cartridge.

Finally Success!!
Enjoy this everyone.

I'll be adding this info to my Website time permitting.

Kind Regards,
Gerry O'Brien

Awesome work. Hopefully someday I'll be able to hone my skills enough to make one of these :)

Could you add it to our wiki too?

I just added the 315-5912 Mapper to the Mapper Pinouts section.

Maxim I sent you a MSG regarding this.

Snow_Cat's SEGA Eagle Library
Post Posted: Wed Feb 23, 2011 8:13 pm
Hey Snow_Cat,

Time permitting of course....if you can update your SEGA Eagle Library with the pin designations for the 315-5912 that would be really great.

But again no rush on that. Just whenever you get a chance.

Hey Snow_Cat,

It's not a huge rush at all. Since I figured out the proper pin designations for the pins A14 through to A19, I was hoping you could update them accordingly in the library file. It still has the original unconfirmed designations, which would not work of course.

Whenever you can spare the time that would be great if you can make the update.

Thanks again Snow_Cat. :)

^ - -^ Done.

docs.google.com2010.09.20.wip.zip
  • 315-5912 in library is now consistent with Febuary version in SMSPower.org Development Wiki.
  • changed compression from 'store' to 'maximum';
zip file reduced to an appropriate 20 kb

edit:authorization key added to link.

Zip download page not available?
Post Posted: Sat Mar 05, 2011 3:17 am
Hi Snow_Cat,

I tried the google download link and it says "Page is unavailable".

Is this just me or is it a bad link?

Ok, there must have been a typo in your last link.

I used the older link you posted before and the updated SEGA Library file was there.

No worries, the link below works.

Thanks again Snow_Cat.

since posted the first 5912 pinout and the sonic blast pcb i thought
the pinout can´t be right.

today I got a garfield - caught in the act cartridge
(labeled "assembled in uk" at the case) which has the external mapper.

I want to do a Schematic, but recogniced that the eagle library is for
version 4.60 and above and I didn´t manage to convert with the
import/export script funktion.
but I like the older Version more than the newer and so had to
draw my own parts.

I reviewed this post an saw that there are good pcb scans
(horizontally and vertically good) so I started to work with paint.

I used only the top layer, cause I recognised I used the scan
of a soldered pcb.

I mirrored the mapper pinout and think its drawn from the
backside. Im not absolutely sure I think the edges doesn´t
match mirrored but it is really hard to see at the cartridge.

I just dl´ded a datasheet from a TQFP44 part and use that as base.
If I find more time today, I will go on.

I have no doubt how to insert pictures within the text, so they are here:
sb pcb and pinout.PNG (134.27 KB)

SEGA_MPR-18201-S_MASK_ROM Pinout seems to be correct,
cause it matches exactly 27c080 / 27c801 Eprom.(JEDEC-Pinout)

So smaller types (27c040,27c020,27c010) can be used.

It seems that the SEGA_MPR-18201-S is nothing else than
a OTP version without the uv-erase-window.

Just seen the desoldered PCB, now pinout seems to be correct!

(I never counted the nc pins on the upper left, there are three, not two.

The mapper pinout doesn´t match Atmels atf15xx CPLD series :-(
but I´m sure we can find a matching part.

Hey django,

A Schematic of the Garfield Cart, that's a tedious process.... way to go Man for taking on that project. :) I know allot of us will be interested in that when you're done.

The MPR-18201-S (Garfield) MASK ROM is the same as the Macronix International IC "MX23C8000" 8M-BIT CMOS MASK ROM.

http://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/74426/MCNIX/MX23C8000.html

I'm pretty sure this is what SEGA has used here for these particular 8-Mbit carts.

I started a schematic for this cart back when I finally managed to map the pins for the 315-5912 mapper, but I was too busy with school to continue working on it.

You should disconnect the !WE line from mapper to flash chip and leave it floating on the mapper and tie it high on the flash... you're not doing any in-circuit programming and any write to flash will cause it to hang the machine due to status word being read out instead of the correct data.

Hi TmEE,

Thanks for that Tip. I never really considered that possibility at all.
Once I got my circuit working, I decided not to change anything. But I should try that. I have yet to run into any hang-ups, but this could cause problems down the road.

Cheers! my good Man.

I've been wondering if the "NC" pins on the 315-5912 Mapper could potentially be higher address lines above A19. I've wondered if this mapper might be capable of supporting memory higher than 8-MBits? I should try and interface it to a 16-MBit and see. Although no 16-MBit game exists but who knows what SEGA's original intentions may have been during the chips design phase. I'd have to use a Multi-ROM menu or something similar, as I don't recall any game Images larger than 1MByte.

Your thoughts?

Completed GG cartridge with the PSOP44 socket adapter
Post Posted: Tue Jun 28, 2011 5:05 pm
Hi Folks,

I just wanted to post a few shots of the recently completed cartridge enclosure for my 1MByte GG Flash cart. This one has the PSOP44 chip Socket to accept the AMD29F800BB flash chip. Allowing quick chip swapping for reprogramming.

I ordered the sockets from China. These suckers were expensive, and with shipping they ended up costing close to $20 a piece. I only ordered 5 pieces but needless to say, I was pretty shocked when I got the invoice!! Yikes!

Regardless, Lot's of Fun. :)

Cheers!

Game Gear 1MegaByte Flash cart Schematic completed
Post Posted: Wed Jun 29, 2011 12:08 pm
Hey Folks,

I finally managed to squeeze some time in to finish my Schematic for my 1MByte GG Flash cart. I know a few people had started to work on this, but I hadn't heard anything in some time,
so I decided to go ahead and finish mine off. A hi-resolution copy of the attached image is available on my site or at the URL posted below.

My GG page:

Schematic diagram direct download link:
