Game stats
Post Posted: Wed Oct 20, 2010 6:05 pm
I've added a new (prototype) feature to the site: on every game page, there's now a little Stats section where it lists how many people own that game, and how many people have completed it.

"Own" means you have a real cartridge.

"Completed" means you played it all the way through, or (if it's not a game with an end) you think you've played it as far as is sensible :)

So long as you're signed in to the forums, you should see a little "Add me" button next to each number. Click it to add yourself to the list. Once you've done that, "Remove me" undoes it.

We're deliberately not segregating this by region or variation.

It might not work if you have a wacky username; let me know if it doesn't.

Your "have" and "completed" list will appear linked from here:

although I may make it nicer later...

Neat idea, I just filled it with my information. 18 owned Game Gear carts, and a few completed games. If emulation doesn't count I will remove some of them later.

Emulation counts, unless your own conscience forbids it. (I didn't count games I hacked or cheated to win, for example.)

Great idea! Right now I'm not having any luck with the "Remove me" button (I clicked on the wrong button for Quartet, which I own but haven't finished, and ought to finish Ninja Princess without using savestates for it to really count).

Very good feature!

I would suggest to separate who have the game complete, only boxed or only the cart...

Good idea Maxim!

It would be nicer if the button's click event was handled by Ajax, reloading the whole page seems a bit cumbersome.

Jquery could easily do that! If you're up to it...

Ah, I had a stupid typo in the "remove me" for finished games. It's fixed now, Owned always worked (and that's the one I was checking...).

I could do it with AJAX, but to make it "nice" it would have to update the page to reflect your click, which would require me to maintain both server-side and client-side code. If I made a bulk-editing page I might make it AJAXy.

We're deliberately keeping it simple. It's easy to get too many details for the exact variant you own, especially for some games that have many variations, multiplied by C/I/B, multiplied by condition, multiplied by multiple copies...

Edit: I've added a new feature now. When you click on a button, a special (blank) Members/YourName page gets created. This includes your owned/played lists, but is also editable by you (but not everyone!). So you're welcome to write stuff there if you like. Again, let me know if you have problems.

The buttons now have images instead of text, in order to be more translation-friendly.

We need Add/Remove buttons are that more Sega 8-bit friendly and don't make it feel like we are in 1996. Any ideas where in the game library we can find those?

In Wonder Boy the heal icon looks like a "+"
(its actually very close in style to the current icon set)

And the bouncing block is a up arrow.
Could come in useful.

Doesn't Lemmings have an Plus button ? For adding more lemmings ?

As for the X button it can be found in many places.

Those icons are in fact somewhat-unlicensed commercial Vista-style art...

Anyway, yes. Alternatively, I can do something in line with the button images in the Cheats section ( etc) but they're pretty ugly...

I was going to use the Psycho Fox "1up" for + but there's no good equivalent for X.

Lemmings' buttons aren't buttons.

The Wonder Boy III Hand could do double-duty:

Changed the bitmap a little, if we are considering general 8-bit art resembling known games.

But the WB3 hand is 8-bit art from a known game... your thumbs-up/down could look a bit more like it. Anyway, I think it's a bit too much like voting "like/dislike". Also, thumbs-up/down have very different meanings in many cultures.

How about Alex Kidd "paper" for "don't have it" and "rock" for "have it"? But that's no good for "completed". Ah, it's confusing.

What I meant it that the thumbs I made are based on the hands you posted, so these thumbs are 8-bit, but not present in any game, though they seem like the hand on WB3...

But alas, they're not the best representation I agree.

You could use something not obviosly iconic to that, keep the current caption, and add an appeal:

(The star being add me, the skull remove me).

Just random.

Would it be possible in the game stats to have members hiscore?

I was thinking the highest Score would appear in the game section and the user name, and if you click on it (or a "see more" button or something like this) you can see data of everybodys high score who has contributed to this. Something like this I'm not a design expert, but highscores would be cool =)

That's a good idea. At some point we would like to setup a system to encourage people playing and sharing high scores and game discussions. However I'm not sure just restricting it to a high score field is enough? Maybe an official game thread?

I think what we should do first is to provide global stats and better access to the "Completed" game infos. With an emphasis on that if would motivate people to play games :)
