It looks like a bug with your url containing spaces, it breaks the entire message display. I removed the url marker and it shows now. |

The Whodunit Index seems to link to the Japan System House/JSH thread for both JSH and the separate developer Japan System Supply.
Japan System Supply's actual thread is here. |

WWF WrestleMania Steel Cage Challenge for SMS
![]() |
This game is listed in the Games section as being released only in Brazil. However I own the European (U.K.) release, the box of which is shown. Only the Brazilian cartridge and country release icon for Brazil are shown.
The cartridge for the European release has a blue & white checkerboard design with blue text. Text in manual and on back of case is in 8 languages. PUBLISHER: Flying Edge DISTRIBUTOR: Acclaim Entertainment Ltd. UPC: 5-023843-019928 |

What Maxim means is that we haven't added the release information for all European SMS games yet. Yet alone not those starting with the letter 'W' .. :( should appear this year.

That's due to the Tails Adventure/Tails Adventures naming differences, the automatic linking expects that not to be the case. The simplest fix is to make sure the box text page name starts with the same base as the scan page.

It's missing from the PNGs too. I wonder if it was always missing? See also http://web.archive.org/web/20040110191748/http://www.smspower.org/dev/docs/offic... which is the oldest snapshot...

I don't have this file in my archives either. I don't even remember where they came from. I uploaded them on March 2002. Thread 1740 is the release announcement (with a mildly annoying me playing the same sorry-i-am-busy-i-am-late card) where it suggest that I have hand edited them to remove a serial number, but I can't find non-edited copies on my hard drive. I may have paper copies. A quick scan through my e-mail archives I can't recall where they came from.
The SMS ones I scanned them from a paper copy and I have high resolution 1-bit version of them (that I reduced down to smaller GIF files). I suppose it would be useful to reupload a package with higher resolution PNG now. |

Why is the developer of Desert Strike[GG] not Tiertex? The credits show this name.
![]() ![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
The developer is The Kremlin http://www.smspower.org/Credits/DesertStrike-SMS I think we can add Tiertex in the publisher field along with Domark.I suppose they were in between The Kremlin and Domark there. |

We have Game Gear credits which are just a copy of the Master System credits. These do not mention Tiertex. Are these Game Gear credits incomplete or incorrect? If so, do you happen to have a screenshot of the correct credits? |

I have e-mailed Michael A Carr to ask if he remembers about Tiertex's involvement.

I've just played through the last campaign of the Game Gear version of Desert Strike and found out that, unlike the Master System version, the ending sequence contains no credits. Therefore the only "credits" in the GG version are the two attached screens which show on startup.
More interesting, however, is that the Game Gear version appears to be very different to the Master System version, on a much deeper level than just graphical differences. The Game Gear version seems to have a fairly major glitch - one of the required locations on the final map is missing. Because of this, I was unable to complete the game without using MEKA's Memory Editor. In doing so, I created a few Action Replay codes and noticed that they are very different to those for the Master System version. It seems the two versions store data in very different ways, which would not be expected if they were developed together. For example, consider the helicopter's armor. The GG version stores this value (which ranges from 0 to 600) in c5e6 - c5e7 in big-endian BCD format, while the SMS version stores it in ced7 - ced8 in little-endian hexadecimal. I therefore think these may be two different ports of the original game, developed by two different companies (but both published by Domark). Note that on his LinkedIn page, Andrew Holdroyd of Tiertex claims to have worked on the Game Gear version of Desert Strike. His name does not appear in the credits of the SMS version. However, see also this interview. |

Yes, they seem to be different games underneath, quite different graphical style and technically different too. The Game Gear credits seem to be a mistake.

Should the publisher of Zool-SMS be Gremlin (rather than Sega), matching Zool-GG?
Also, based on this auction, should the publisher of Zool-GG in Japan be "infocom"? |

Ninja Gaiden region release and Spiderman date
![]() |
Ninja Gaiden was released in Brazil too, in white plastic box (it's marked as EU only): http://www.smspower.org/Games/NinjaGaiden-SMS
Spiderman (vs the Kingin) was release in 1991, same year as the Sega Genesis version: http://www.smspower.org/Games/SpiderManVsTheKingpin-SMS |

Release data is known to be incomplete, but posting evidence can help. Release dates need evidence too, else we use copyright years.

Ninja Gaiden was released here in Brazil as we can find several occurrences for Ninja Gaiden TecToy on Google (including images too). Example: https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&source=hp&q=master+system+ninja+g... For Spiderman (vs the Kingpin): the game was released for Genesis, SMS and GG in the same year, 1991. If it was 1990, the SMS version would be released before the Genesis version, what is incorrect. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amazing_Spider-Man_vs._The_Kingpin |

I'm sure plenty of games were really released later then their in-game copyright date, but without reliable confirmation from the time (e.g. trade documentation of release dates) we are left guessing. Wikipedia is not a reliable source for this.
Some contemporary magazine interviews suggest Sega held back finished third party games in order to even out the release schedule. |

Got it, Maxim. Thank you for your patience to explain.
For Ninja Gaiden in Brazil, is this enough or do we need more proof of its release? |

Bank Panic : European Exclusive
![]() |
Hi, I was looking the wiki page about Bank Panic, and I saw that is tagged as "European Exclusive", but it seems there's a TecToy Release.
Is it because Brazilian's release is not confirmed ? http://www.smspower.org/Games/BankPanic-SMS |
|
![]() ![]() ![]() |

|

It was released, as cartdrige in white plastic box: http://www.sega-brasil.com.br/Tectoy/index.php/Bank_Panic

The release info is incomplete because Bock hasn't entered everything. For future reference, the best thing is if we can have a good quality scan - and I apologise if someone already sent me one, my backlog is enormous.

Removed the tag now and marked product number as "N/A" since it doesn't have one on the known scan. Thanks!

I uploaded sprites for the first time today and I found an error in http://www.smspower.org/Sprites/RecentUploads
I apologize if this is a known issue but I've read the whole thread and haven't found references to this. Also, the big version of the sprites I've uploaded look distorted and don't seem to reflect the 1:1 version. I've read the instructions in the Sprites thread before uploading but I thought "1:1" meant actual resolution (e.g. 100% size, no scaling). By "1:1" did you mean square aspect ratio? The sprites I've uplaoded are not perfectly square. Is that a problem? My sprites are here. By the way, shall I delete the "dot" sprite? It's just a 2*2 square and the big version looks like what it is: a plain yellow square. |
|
![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
The Sprites section tries to inject the zoomed sprites into the top of every page, what you see there is it showing an error message.
Your Ms Pac-Man sprites look OK to me, I must be a bug in the zoomer causing the distortion. |
|
![]() ![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
So the issue with the "corrupted" sprites is that they contain a full alpha channel, and have some non-black pixels in the alpha channel. The zoomer code is presumably not very happy with this, and it extra unnecessary bytes in the images anyway. The fix is to re-save as paletted images with 1-bit transparency. I used Paint Shop Pro, normal PNG optimisers usually can't optimise this sort of thing because they see it as a lossy change.
![]() ![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
Oh, ok. Well, what I did was selecting everything surrounding the sprite with the magic wand tool (it's easy becauyse the background is a solid color) and then deleted the selection, leaving a transparent background. Then I saved the image. I used a program that gave me zero control over saving. I should have exported the file which gives more control over the palette, compression, transparency and other things. |

Advices
![]() |
Most of the time I use MEKA by disabling background (F11). After I use ASU which is very handy to quickly extract sprites from all my screenshots (very efficient batch) http://www.alferdspritesheetunpacker.forkandbeard.co.uk/forkandBeard/apps/AlferdSpritesheetUnpacker/Download.aspx |
|
![]() ![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
Hmm, Ms. Pac-Man is a bit unusual because the black sprite colour is also the transparent colour - so it relies on the black background to show through, which it won't always do - for example, ghost eyes travelling over dots.
Modern tools like Photoshop sometimes don't offer the same sort of low-level options as older ones, that's why I use archaic software... |
|
![]() ![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
I did that in the first screenshot I took from Ms. Pac Man as well as in some other cases. In other cases (including some other Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Man screenshots) I decided to leave the background on and edit manually. I didn't know about ASU. Thanks for the advice!
I use the prehistoric Fireworks MX :) It's from the Macromedia era, long before the deradful Adobe took over. The "save" option just saves to PNG. I should use "Export Preview" option instead. Would that help? |
