This thread is to discuss the tagging of games.
You can browse the games tags here: http://www.smspower.org/Games/Index And all other tags (including site work-in-progress markers) http://www.smspower.org/Tags/Index |

I am not sure how to classify Champion Billiards.
I applied the "board game" and "family" tags only for now for the lack of a better word. http://www.smspower.org/Tags/BoardGame Also listed there are Casino Games, Parlour Games, Mahjong games, which aren't really board games. Can you think of either a better tag to replace "Board game" or a new tag to identify those kind of games. Also does Champion Billiards classify as "Sports" ? I would say no, but it is in the Champion serie with all other sports game. |

It is "sports" in that is it competitive, even if it is not physical exercise. Except of course this is a one-player game...
It certainly is not a board game. We could go with "tabletop game" or perhaps "game simulation" for these titles. It is acceptable to not have 5 tags on every item... I'm not sure about this "Family" tag. It seems unclear how something qualifies. Is it required to be multiplayer? Are all puzzle games family games? |

Anime tags

There is an "Anime" tag:
http://www.smspower.org/Tags/Anime However it is clear that some of those games are technically originating from manga from which an anime was later derived (not all) so "Manga" would technically be more right. I am keeping "Anime" tag only for now for the sake of simplicity and reducing confusion and we can always think about something later. |

FM tag

Maxim added a FM tag on games supporting FM Unit output:

I added a "Glitchy on NTSC Systems" tag for Bart vs. Space Mutants and BTTF II. I don't own many PAL games, so any other games that get weird on NTSC tag it!

I changed it to "PAL Only" for brevity and added a description:

Works for me. |

A couple of ideas for additional tags. Is it OK for me to create these, or is this information intended to be available elsewhere - perhaps from Games-Releases?
"Classic Re-release" - Games which were re-released in "Classic" packaging. e.g. The Flash. "Sega Card" - Games which saw an export release on card. There could also be a similar tag for MyCards. |

Yes this information shall be available in Games-Releases which hopefully will also include "lists" (all Japanese games, all card games, etc) |

I'm trying to find all the 2-player SMS games but there's no tag about it... Or am I wrong?
|

That's not done with tagging, but unfortunately that makes it a bit more strange. There is a $:Players variable on each page, accessed as so:
http://www.smspower.org/Games/Index?action=search&q=%24%3APlayers%3D1-2 ...but now you have to deal with all the possible values of that - temporary page here: http://www.smspower.org/Site/SandBox shows: 0 1 1 (?) <-- we don't know? 1-10 1-2 1-2 (Alt) <-- lazy typing? 1-2 (Altenating) <-- typo 1-2 (Alternating) 1-2 (Local) 1-4 1-4 (Local) 1-6 1-8 2 <-- no 1-player option? We could change it to use some (hidden) tags (or non-tag links) to enable it to be multi-valued, e.g. we could have 1-2 = 1Player, 2Player, SimultaneousMultiPlayer 1-2 (Alternating) = 1Player, 2Player, AlternatingMultiPlayer 1-4 (Local) = 1Player, 2Player, 4Player, GGLocalMultiplayer ...and render something readable from that. This way, the question "what 2-player games are there" would become "what games have the 2Player tag". It's kind of undefined right now and we'd have to go through all the games to correct them. |

Is there currently any way to find system-exclusives? I know there are region-exclusivity tags, but it'd be nice to also be able to find, say, Game Gear-only games, for example. The way the system is currently set up, with "Same Game, Different Console", might make it possible to automate this--or maybe it's already possible to specifically search for games that don't have this data set? That would achieve something similar, netting results that are exclusive to something, which could then be refined with "$:Platform=GG", etc.

Something like this:
GG games not on SMS GG games not on SMS, with alternative names removed Both suffer from not taking account of the custom overrides for the "same game, different system". |

Ah, yep, that achieves much the same results. Thanks, Maxim.

How about a "224 Line" tag for games which use the extra-height 224-line video mode? I believe this would apply to:
Cosmic Spacehead (SMS) The Excellent Dizzy Collection (SMS) The Excellent Dizzy Collection (GG) [SMS-GG] Fantastic Dizzy (SMS) Fantastic Dizzy (GG) [SMS-GG] Micro Machines (SMS) Are there any others? I feel the tag should also cover Game Gear games which use the mode internally, along with its 32-row name table etc., even though in these cases the screen height is unchanged: Cosmic Spacehead (GG) Micro Machines (GG) Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament (GG) Star Trek: Generations - Beyond the Nexus (GG) Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Advanced Holodeck Tutorial (GG) Similarly, we could have a "240 Line" tag for games which use the 240-line mode. Are there any? |

I'm not sure about this one - for the GG mode ones there is no apparent effect for the player so it's not really tag-worthy, but is worth noting on the Development page; where it does show, I think "extra height" is a better non-technical tag.

Instead of tagging the Games pages with 224-Line, I have added the tag to the corresponding Development pages.
On the Games pages I have either removed the tag altogether or replaced it with Extra-Height - depending on whether the use of the taller video mode is evident when playing the game. |

'Unreleased' tag
Posted: Sat Dec 15, 2012 11:50 am

I am finding the 'Unreleased' tag to be rather misleading if not inaccurate in some cases. Currently we've got http://www.smspower.org/Tags/Unreleased :
The A-Team Barbie Super Model Car Licence Challenge Soccer Champion Ski Color & Switch Test Crazy Faces David Robinson Basketball Dinobasher - Starring Bignose the Caveman Dr. Franken The Excellent Dizzy Collection Frogger Game de check! Koutsuu Anzen Great Escape 2 Hook Lethal Weapon 3 Linkword NBA Jam Pac-In-Time Pat Riley Basketball Promocao Especial M.System III Compact SG1000 M2 Check Program Sonic's Edusoft Spirou Street Hero Super Basketball Yogi Bear in Yogi Bears Goldrush Car Licence was "released" but is just of a very special pack. Promocao Especial SG-1000 M2 Check Program, Color & Switch Test are "released" software for internal use that weren't for sale. Linkword is a bit unknown. I would like to find a tag that could group all those games so they are easy to find, without the misieading "Unreleased" statement. Maybe "Not for sale"? Games could use a combination of tags along with Not for sale? Any idea? |
|
|

Maybe just put a description on the Unreleased tag page like 'not released for public purchase, whether because it was abandoned or just for internal use'.

Which is the requirement for a game to be tagged as Bundled?
http://www.smspower.org/Tags/Bundled I'm asking due to a couple "strange" entries e.g. Double Dragon (SMS). |
|
|
Posted: Sat Aug 16, 2014 5:34 pm |
They are minor local bundles that included those games (typically with a extra sticker on the box). I do agree that it is somehow misleading. Perhaps we should only include the known-major bundles?
|
Posted: Sat Aug 16, 2014 7:58 pm |
I just can't recall ever seeing a bundle with Double Dragon, but probably was a local one like this Wonder Boy pack from Netherlands: http://shinobiman.proboards.com/post/103597/thread
|
Posted: Sat Aug 16, 2014 8:01 pm |
I think it was a Brazilian bundle.
|

I added the "Bundled" tag to Double Dragon. Looking at the page history reveals a reference to http://segaretro.org/File:SMS2DAP_EU_Box_Front.jpg.
I agree that it may be better to tag only the major bundles (just as we tag only the major built-in games), but where should we draw the line? Include those with custom box/sleeve art but not those which only had an extra sticker? |

Master System Exclusive Tag
Posted: Wed Apr 12, 2017 5:29 pm

Hello.
A few days ago, I wanted to know which games only existed on the Master System (not on the Game Gear or Arcade). I found this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Master_System-only_games I'm not sure that this list is correct, but I thought that a Tag "Master System Exclusive" might be interesting. It could be declined in "Game Gear Exclusive", "SG-1000 Exclusive" ... |

I think this is reasonable.

Master System Exclusive Tag

I looked at the games that are in the Wikipedia list. It seems to me that its are all good "Master System Exclusive".
I think there is few missing (I see "Tennis Ace" for example). If the tag is available and everyone agrees, I'm ready to add it on those games there. |

Hello everyone, regarding games tagged as NES Ports, I believe that Spider-man: Sinister Six and Star Wars could be categorized as NES Ports.
