We regret to inform you, that
Nick Warren, aka Heliophobe, long time member and supporter of our community, passed away on thursday, january 29 at the age of 29. Despite being active here, Nick was sick since a few months, and went to the hospital in january. You'll probably remember him for the quality, intelligence and sense of humor in his contributions. Additionnally, it isn't a well known fact but Nick generously handled hosting fees of the site for many years, which permitted our community to stay alive all this time. More important parts of Nick's life are unknown to us, and I'm certain that his friends and family have more and better reasons to miss him. Our sincere thoughts goes to them. His close friend Genevieve has setup a simple remembrance page here (page closed by Genevieve since then). Shall I add some of the things that he created: Nine Pixels (2006), SMS Power 7 (2004), Copyright Violation (2002), SMEG (SMS Emulator for Dreamcast) (2001) + Interview, Damiana (Y2Kode 2001 competition), Tetracycline (2000), Good Advice (2000), Sprite (2000). RIP. |

A real shock indeed, since he was as knowledgable as Maxim (in a good way). I didn't know him that well but he was good and very helpful in the community.
Godspeed and rest in peace Heliophobe. You will be helping with SMS stuff in heaven now. |

Rest In Peace Nick Warren, my thoughts go out to you and your family.
I thought I would share these... For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Isaiah 55.12 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told y ou. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14.1-6 Birth is a beginning And death a destination But life is a journey A going -- a growing From stage to stage From childhood to maturity And youth to age. From innocence to awareness And ignorance to knowing; From foolishness to discretion And then perhaps, to wisdom. From Weakness to strength Or strength to weakness And, often, back again. From health to sickness And back we pray, to health again. From offense to forgiveness, From loneliness to love, From joy to gratitude, From pain to compassion, And grief to understanding -- From fear to faith. From defeat to defeat to defeat -- Until, looking backward or ahead, We see that victory lies Not as some high place along the way, But in having made the journey, stage by stage. A sacred pilgrimage. Birth is a beginning And death a destination. But life is a journey, A sacred pilgrimage -- Made stage by stage -- To life everlasting -Unknown |

This is sad news, indeed. We lived in the same part of California for a while. It's a shame I didn't get to meet him face to face.
Happy Trails, man. |

The SMSPower Radio team has organised a special tribute show for Nick, you can download the show here
There are some voice comments at the end from a couple of members, thanks all. Please understand this was hard for me to do and I felt I had to do this. Thanks to SteveSMS for the support with the show, to DMEnduro, Niloctronic, Bock and of course to Heliophobe for his great contribution to this community. RIP Heliohpobe, this ones for you! EDIT: Fixed up link so it doesn't return a 404 |

I'd play a funeral song in MOD2PSG2 when I get the notes online. I wasn't there long enough to even half-know him; the only way I knew him was from the programs he made, but this is emotionally devastating to our community, and more of so to those close to him. I live closer to his area than you think (Seward, AK). We know he may be in Heaven for not playing NES...
Rest in Peace, Nick "Heliophobe" Warren...(May 5, 1978 ~ Janurary 29, 2008) |

What can I say, I've not posted on this forum for years, but I was shocked to read of Heliophobe's death.
He's been a real contributor to the SMS scene for years and it's very sad that he's passed on so young. My sympathies to his friends and family. |

Oh. Your. God.
I don't know what to say - Heliophoebe, as he was once mockingly called, was one of the greatest contributors to this wonderful community.. The interwebs have lost something special :( |

Heliophobe was one of the sharpest people on this forum, and pretty damn funny as well. We are all diminished by his loss, but are lucky to have the legacy of all of his incredible contributions to this community.
My deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones. |

hiya, Im from DCEMU too. (resident mac psuedo-programmer). i am really sorry to hear about this.
When i first came on the scene, I idolized some/most emulator programmers there. Heliphobe was well spoken and being a sms man from the beginning, I really had a special place in my heart for him. just wanna say that his months/years spent programming....well..i hope he knew he had a team behind him(if not physically ,in spirit) always rooting him on. :) |

There are a few more tech demos that could be added to the list, I have various unorganised files around that may or may not include associated documentation:
- Birthday Card - SMS Sound Test (was/is very helpful for improving sound emulation) - Synth Test (making new audio effects using HBlank timing) Also, there are various earlier versions of the productions mentioned previously. |

This really suprised me to.
I just decided to show my face over here again and I noticed this news. I never got to know him much but the times I did chat to him he was of great help and a really nice guy to chat with! I got a question to whoever might of known him better if he had any big favourite SMS games. As id like to make him a tribute song inspired by one of his favourite games. Rest in peace! Peder. |

Nick was a great guy and a pure genius. Not many people can be as creative and skilled as he was and remain completely humble about it. He'd come up with these amazing ideas out of nowhere, impress all of us, and move right along to the next project. I wish I had the chance to see what he had in store for our next competition.
I'm glad our little community had the opportunity to be graced by Nick's presence. My thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends. Heliophobe, thank you for giving so much to us and supporting SMS Power. You will be missed. |

Ah! Posting the only photo I took back in March 2003 in San Jose. I went there for a conference and Nick and Sweater Fish Deluxe took a several hour drive to meet. (the photo is when eventually we got something showing up on tv after messing up with the thing for a while). RIP

Holy shit. First Blackjax and now Heliophobe. All the internet people I used to like are dying. It's depressing in a way that cannot be expressed on a messageboard at all. | |
