SMS Display Unit / Kiosk unit Question
Posted: Sat Nov 03, 2007 10:48 am

I have recently received an SMS Kiosk unit but havent tried it out yet. I have a few questions.
I live in the UK so our Voltage is 240. This unit is 120, so I need a step down transformwer. This much I know, but the bit I don't understand is the Wattidge. It doesnt say on the unit what the wattidge is. allthough the plug has a sticker saying 1250W (is this correct?! or does it mean the cable can be used up to that amount?). I have seen this site for stepdown transformers, http://www.beststuff.co.uk/voltage_conversion.htm?gclid=CJ7OxY65wI8CFQ0vlAodh1yRQQ the high wattage ones are very exspensive and I hope this isnt neccessery :( I note there is also a TV out on the back of the unit. I guess I don't need to use this? (as that would require a step up transformer to work on a UK TV) Is this the only thing I need concern myself with? or will Amps and Hz need to considered? I have never used a US electrical item in the UK as you can tell. Will i need to do anything with the Fuses that you can also see in the picture with the power in and out? Or can I just assume thats fine? Lastly, the only physical thing I can see wrong with the unit is that part of it is detatched (see picture). My best guess is that the guy used the screws from this section to hold the access panel/ lid on for transit. Whats the chances this has got damaged? Is that a delicate componant? |

I would be inclined to say that 1250W (10A) is just the max rating of the power cord.
According to the plate near the power switch the unit draws 0.3A (36W). To me it seems odd that its main fuse is rated for 3A (360W), that seems like an aweful lot of leeway for something that according to the plate draws a relatively small amount of current. Then again I'm no electrical engineer so I have to assume its rated that for a good reason. Based on that I would be aiming for something a little over the fuses rating to cover your bases (noticed some 500W transformers on that site would be plenty). The extra bit thats floating around freely looks like the power supply, and its unlikely any of the components will have been affected much during transport. The power out for the tv is more likely just a convenience, in a public environment having only one power cord instead of two would be an advantage. |

great, thanks for the help.
I'l try and get a Transformer next week and get this thing up and running. I'm hoping to take it to a Retro event and put my fave games and maybe some unreleased/ proto reproductions in it for people to play on. I don't know when the next event in my area is though, maybe next year. |

I doubt it needs more than the 0.3A stated. You ought to be able to hook it up with a smallish AC adaptor and save a lot of money, but you'd need some help getting it hooked up.

How do you mean I would need some help? Is it not a simple task of pluging the Kiosk cable into the transformer and then the transformer cable into the wall? Would be great though if I can just buy the cheaper transformer. Ive allready spent abit getting this unit over here, got charged £40 in tax and customs fees :( |

I think he was suggesting that you could bypass the built in transformer/power supply and rig up a standard power adapter.
Whether or not this would work depends on how the circuitry is wired together, it is not clear where some of that cabling goes to from that one picture. IMO that would be more trouble than its worth just to save a few bucks, but thats entirely your own decision. |

ok, I don't think I have the technical ability to do that and also don't want to risk spoiling it, So I would rather spend the money to have it work 100%. i'l report back my findings when I get the transformer, hopfully tomorrow. Just to add, if I buy the low wattidge transformer, whats likely to actually happen when I turn it on if the transformer isnt suitable? |

At worst you would simply blow the fuse in the transformer if it were drawing more current than it was rated for.
I see no reason why it should draw more than the specified 0.3A but without knowning where that wiring hooks up to exactly I can't tell what other things in the circuit might try to draw more than the rating. At a geuss I'd say its likely to do with the optional TV if one were hooked up as it draws a fair bit of current. The puzzling thing about that is that the main fuse at 3A would blow long before the 5A one for the TV ever did, that is why the setup is odd. |

I just realized we don't have a good thread with pictures of this, or at least I cannot find it now. I'm pretty sure lots of pictures have been posted but they weren't gathered in one place.
Attaching a couple of pictures here. |

What are the extra unpopulated slots for? Jp games? One of the units in the picture has connectors installed.. the other only has 3 installed. Also how does the unit function when you select a game.. just resets and loads the newly selected game? I never seen one of these but do like it

It has a bunch of card slots, in line with Sega's apparent expectation that cards would be more useful. It just resets when you change game, and also when the timer expires. There's no menu or other software driving it.
|

Well, there is software driving it but none of it is "visible" in the form of a user interface. The software basically respond to the big buttons and manage the timers.

Ah, I thought that was done without a CPU. Certainly the Master System part is just running games like a regular system, just one that gets reset a lot.

I may be wrong on the exact detail, the display unit BIOS has been dumped. MESS is emulating it afaik:
https://github.com/mamedev/mame/blob/115bb9936c5cd3faf955d7eb1e251a94e4744b7b/sr... I vaguely recall someone disassembled it maybe? |

Has anyone found a way of making the games play for longer? I’m sure I was told that you had to put the dip switches into a certain combination to lengthen the game play time but I never did work anything out with it.

It would be possible by hacking the BIOS code to disable the timer code and rewrite that modified code into a different EPROM. |

What were the 3.5mm trs sockets on the front of the board for? Headphones or 3d glasses?

Oh my god, I remember staring at one of these things as a kid waiting for the Wonder Boy III demo to show up...
Hmm...
Weird that none of these cartridges have such thing. |

Here are a few pictures of the "display only" games.
They show up fairly frequently on eBay nowadays. |

Ah, there they are. Out of curiosity, is there a list of all the known "For Product Display-Working Unit" labeled cartridges?
I'm guessing that all of them are 100% identical to retail copies, aren't they? |

"Ah, there they are. Out of curiosity, is there a list of all the known "For Product Display-Working Unit" labeled cartridges?"
AFAIK they are: F-16 Fighting Falcon Super Tennis Transbot Alex Kidd in Miracle World Black Belt Choplifter Fantasy Zone Gangster Town Ghostbusters Great Baseball Great Football Pro Wrestling Rambo First Blood Part 2 Rocky Shooting Gallery Space Harrier World Grand Prix Being is known finite list (I am missing any?) we could probably add them to the Games Releases entries in the database. "I'm guessing that all of them are 100% identical to retail copies, aren't they? " Yes. |

Thank you, I added them to the list. Do you have photos for them? I can't seem to find pictures in my stash at the moment. |

Don't forget these.
Enduro Racer Fantasy Zone 2 Ghostbusters Great Golf Outrun Penguin Land Zillion I have the Ghostbusters display cart so will post a pic of that later. |

Right, I forgot Ghostbusters (I do have it actually).
About the others, where did you get that list from? (Enduro Racer, Fantasy Zone 2, Great Golf, Outrun, Penguin Land, Zillion) Just to confirm, we are talking only about cartridges with the white label "Product Display-Working Unit only, not for sale". Whatever is indicated on the stickers over the Display Unit itself do not matter here. |

Thinking about it, I took those games from the list on the front of the Kiosk so please ignore them (apart from Ghostbusters).

Thanks for confirming! Should have been clearer especially as some pictures at the top of this topic shows regular cartridge as well... rastanfarian: how about Great Football and Pro Wrestling? |

What kind of person who collects rare SMS carts donates them to Goodwill? :D

When the pause button is pressed on these kiosk units.. i assume it does the same as the pause button on a standard master system. But does it also pause the timer, ie. stops it switching to the next game?
|
Posted: Sat Jun 02, 2018 12:10 am |
I would expect it wouldn't affect the timer since I would imagine the Pause button to be just like any other gameplay button as far as the timer is concerned. (it only activates a "button pushed" signal to the game, if in a different manner than the normal buttons, and it is up to the game code to decide what to do with that signal)
|
Posted: Sat Jun 02, 2018 9:20 am |
That's correct.
Technically it works a little differently from regular buttons but that doesn't affect the statement there, it's still up to the game to react to it, it would difficult for the system to tell that the game is paused. |

Thanks for the replys on that. Also what happens if a game isnt in one of the slots and that slot is selected? Either by the button for that slot or the timer? I assume it acts like a normal system and just goes to the bios?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but can anyone confirm the existence of the Pro Wrestling store display cart? The link that rastanfarian kindly posted has no pictures and no mention of this game and after years of searching I've never found one.

I’m not sure these images of the 3011 Unit instructions have been posted here (or anywhere??) before, apologies if they have already. I have been talking to a guy who bought a boxed unit that had the instructions included (at least 2 out of maybe 3 sheets, as they are labeled 1/3 and 3/3 so possibly 2/3 exists but missing on this occasion?).
