the next question, cartridges (japanese sonic)

I found some funny sonic cartridge on a flea market in lissabon.
It seems to be japanese, is for two players (unlike my sonic 1&2
cartridges) and has a very small circuit inside. As my game gear
doesn´t like to connect to any power sources (see last post),
I wasn´t able to try it out, but it looks very funny.

Never seen this before! (Compare with my "normal" Sonic cart above, which doesn't have the "VS" logo.)
It would be interesting to find out if this version genuinely does have a two-player mode, or if the label was just a misprint.

It is possible that it is a daughter cart to the main cart. One that runs in the second player mode only. Meaning it would connect to the other gamegear and communicate the data back and forth for two player mode?

Possible, but why isn´t there a proper rom, and this epoxy spot in it´s place?
Too bad my GameGear died so I can´t run it. :-(((((

That is a rom chip. It is sometimes cheaper to produce them in that fashion then it is to produce the encased chip. If you look at a lot of the cheaper kids toys that have electronics in them (such as the mini piano things) they have a small black blob similar to the one in your cart. It holds nothing more than the chip that is usually in the normal rom casing..
