Good Idea/Bad Idea...
Post Posted: Mon Jul 10, 2000 10:53 pm
Would it be a good idea to try to re-translate the text and dialogue in Kenseiden, or a bad one? I would like to do it but I dunno that much about translating game text. So, I have no idea whether it's an easy thing or a pain in the ass. For instance, if there was something I would really like to change it would be the ending. Here's the original text from the game...

"Unbeknownst to anyone, thou hast killed the monster and
thy battle is done. A cauldron of fire envelopes the
enchanted castle, scorching the heavens. The darkness
clears, and light returns to the land. Thou beginst
to journey in silence to a place unknown, with no
one knowing thy deepest thoughts."

That's okay, but wouldn't it have been better if it were written like this?

"Unknown to anyone, you have killed the monster and
the battle is done. A blaze of fire envelopes the
enchanted castle and smoke rises to the heavens. As
the darkness clears, light returns to the land. Now
that it's all over, you begin a journey in silence
to an unknown place, without anyone knowing your
deepest thoughts."

I'm no litterary expert but that sounds pretty good, doesn't
it? Anyway, good idea/bad idea. Lemme know.

Vaguely on-topic.
It could be dog-simple, so long as the text is encoded in ASCII (it often is). Just search the rom cartridge with a hex editor, and replace the old text with the new. You might want to look and see if each line ends with a special character, or if spaces are $00 instead of $20, things like that.
Make a savestate just before the game ending to make it easier to test.

Oh, if you make the end text longer, you have have some problem if the text is followed by data that's used in the game. So make it shorter.

Now, I must ask:

how is this:

Quote
> "Unbeknownst to anyone, thou hast killed the monster and
> thy battle is done. A cauldron of fire envelopes the
> enchanted castle, scorching the heavens. The darkness
> clears, and light returns to the land. Thou beginst
> to journey in silence to a place unknown, with no

any worse than this?

Quote

I don't think the old fashioned pronouns really add or detract from the game. I'm guessing in the original japanese they used some antiquated grammar and word choices to give it the feel of feudal japanese (while still be readable), and tried to recapture that same feel by using some obsolete forms of english words.

Ah, seems silly to hack a cart just to change the text in a game without much text.

[but if you want to]
All the text is stored as plain text in the rom. Use all CAPS, use $FF (the byte, not "$FF" as a string) to denote the end of a string, or $FF $FF to denote the end of a line of text in the end sequence, and as I mentioned, don't overwrite any data beyond the end of the original string.

Get a hex editor and search for 'JUMP' to find the ingame text, or UNBEKNOWNST to find the end text.

Knock yerself out.
