Whodunit: Open and Bubble Bobble GG
Post Posted: Thu Jun 24, 2010 3:53 pm
I've found a company history overview for Open in an old magazine with the following entry:

September 10th, 1994: Completed Bubble Bobble (8-bit Sega machine version) on request for Taito in Japan.

Bubble Bobble for Game Gear is copyright 1994, so that would fit into the time frame.

On a side note, the overview also lists Samgukji III (the game itself only shows Gameline for Copyright), so I'd say it is now save to assume that Dodgeball King was also made by them, with all the signs saying "Open" in the game (the game itself was made after the list, so it is not included).

Also listed is Twin Mouse, but not Red Wiz, so the latter one might be unreleased, after all.

Awesome. C.Y.JUNG and C.I.JUNG are obviously Jung Chanyong and Jung Chanil of MbitM/Namu, who fusioned with Open in 1993 (did the Zemmix games New Boggle Boggle, Super Bubble Bobble, Micro Xevious and maybe Eagle 5, as well as a number of probably unreleased PC games).

J.J.LIM was involved in Metal Force (Famicom) and most likely Jang Pung 3 (full name Lim Jung Jae). Y.D.CHOE is also credited in Metal Force.

E.H.LEE is probably Lee.Eunhee from Samgukji 3.

I love it when a plan comes together.

GG Bubble Bobble also contains the string "YONGDEOK." I assume that's what "Y.D." stands for.

Did you notice Toto World 3 and Jang Pung II share music?

Hmm, all possible Korean words pronounced like that are extremely obscure stuff, so I'd say its quite likely. Does the ROM contain any other full names as strings?

I think I did back when I first played them, but totally forgot about it... I guess that pretty much confirms that game, too.

I don't think so. I don't know if it's some random string or it performs a function like these.

Specifically, the World 1 BGM from Toto World 3 turns up in Jang Pung II.

Was Suho Jeonsa published by Daou Infosys? It, Toto World 3, and Koko Adventure (FC) have a "DS" item number.

That's correct. Metal Force (FC) and the Soccer game, too (dunno if they have an item number, though).

Wasn't Jang Pung II released for Game Gear, not Master System? The name of the ROM indicates it's a Game Gear game that runs in SMS mode.

Yes that is correct, I think it has been found only as a GG cart so far (although I wouldn't be surprised if a SMS cartridge exists).

To clarify, the state of the Games/ DB for Korean stuff is quite rudimentary (fixes and comments always welcome).

- Actually, it sounds like ALL the music in Jang Pung II was used in Toto World 3.

- When I was playing Toto World 3 a couple days ago, about an hour in, a weird black screen came up with two purple Korean characters accompanied by something similar to the Konami pause tone.

- I can now beat Toto World 3 in about 20 minutes.

- Did Korean Master Systems not have pause buttons? Why don't these games pause?

- Derboo: I wrote up a new blog post with stuff from your HG101 feature.

Oh, yeah, another thing I totally forgot about. You know the reccomendation in many game manuals not to play longer than a certain time. This game kindly reminds you when that time passes (50 minutes in this case. The "feature" is even mentioned on the back cover of the box.

Btw. I could scan the cover & manual for Toto World for the site, if you guys don't already have them waiting to be entered in the database.
