Korean Master System history, Gam*Boy, Aladdin Boy
Post Posted: Sun Nov 06, 2005 6:55 pm
I now have a Korean friend :)
Interesting info there:

When 80's, two major electric company Hyundai and Samsung
has introduced a game console into Korean market
Hyundai put NES(same as American one) as the name of "Com-Boy"
and Samsung soon imported Master System(same as Japanese one) as the name of "Gam-Boy".
(In Korean, Com-Boy=컴보이 / Gam-Boy=겜보이)

and a few years later...
Samsung introduced Master System 2 as "Gam-Boy 2"
and it included Alex Kidd built-in...
and it's Korean!
I think if you get this console, you can dump the Alex Kidd Korean version.

And in 16-bit era, also there were "Super Com-Boy" and "Super Gam-Boy"...
but in early 90's(maybe), the name of Gam-Boy was changed.
In that time Samsung put marketing power on their new PC brand "Aladdin"...
So "Gam-Boy 2", sold in the market that time, was became "Aladdin Boy"
and Super Gam-Boy turned into "Super Aladdin Boy" also.
So Gam-Boy 2 and Aladdin Boy is the same one except the labels.
(Aladdin Boy=알라딘 보이)
but many Korean people thinks that "Aladdin Boy" was Mega Drive, because MD was hot in the market that time.

and there is a interesting fact about Korean SMS.
is the American or European controller same as Japanese one?
rectangle, black, and big D-Pad.
but the Korean one is diffrent.
Korean SMS has different, roundish pad?
and it uses the D-pad like NES!
it provides great controls
but now it's quite hard to find that controller...

More from Leadkun:

by the way, I recieved a detailed information
of Samsung Gam-Boy.
It is released in 1989
and the first model(logo written in Korean) includes AC adaptor inside the console
the price was 119000 Korean Won(approx. 119 US Dollar)
It was more expensive than the popular Korean console Zemmix(MSX modified)...
because Zemmix was 98000 Korean Won.
But in 1990, Gam-Boy sold 100000 consoles during the year
and it was a top sales in Korean official console market
(in bootleg ones, Famicom clones were stronger though)

This is good news. I hope we'll see some nice rare stuff coming soon :)

Sorry to get non-Sega related again but korean stuff is so hard to come by I try to use every chance there is:

A korean version of the Bomberman Collection for the GB mono was mentioned in the other thread about korean games (only known undumped one since pokemon eun was dumped recently by a good friend). If anyone has this game and is willing to get it dumped please let me know - all costs will be refunded - thank you! Also all farther info about it like the original korean title, screenshots or pics of cart/box are welcome!

Here's a light crusader poster sold with the blue aladin boy

They got the light phaser and the game gear !

Seems like they also had the 3d glasses... rarer than the argentina anteojos 3d I've seen once ?

Is there any Korean SMS console with SEGA logo instead of Samsung? Possibly a Jap console with Korean SEGA box in very early steps?

Wow... there were much less dead threads you could have resurrected, one even still on the first page!

Mark III had the Sega logo on the System, besides the Oacs logo. It is possible that Samsung had sold repackaged Japanese systems, but I haven't seen one. Anyway, it would be impossible to tell nowadays, cause when you'd find one, chances are someone just stuck it in the Korean package much later.

It is known that the Mega Drive had been sold under its original name in Korea, too, but no further info on the when and why.

As this is up again, anyway, 100,000 is an understatement. The statistics available to me say 180,000 for 1990, and 130,000 the year before.

All the sales numbers for the officially available consoles from 1989-1993 in comparison: (except Zemmix, but another statistic says 415,000 units until fall 1990 for the Zemmix models combined)

                          1989      1990      1991      1992      1993
Gam-/Aladdinboy        130,000   180,000   160,000   180,000    80,000
Comboy                  20,000    80,000   100,000   110,000    50,000
Super Gam-/Aladdinboy        -    43,000    51,000    76,000    24,000
Super Comboy                 -         -         -    20,000    60,000

Why is Hy*ndai on the list of spam-related words?

I asked because of a greek collector who's saying that he has a boxed Korean SMS with SEGA logo, nowhere Samsung. It seems very strange to me and maybe not true due to his avoidance showing a photo... Or it's an Asian (Chinese) version and he thinks it's Korean...

An early 1994 issue of the Game World magazine. Except the Zemmix figures, they're from a file I got somewhere on the web. It might be worth mentioning that the other statistic's figures for other consoles in 1989 deviate a bit from what I posted above (about 10%), but that also just throws Gam*boy and Super Gam*boy sales together.

Or someone just sold him an "ordinary" Japanese system in a Korean box. Everything is possible.
