Just seen this site linked to on another forum: The Korean Video Game Museum
Haven't dug too far into it yet, but it looks like there's some pretty nice stuff on there...(Samsung GameGear, anyone?) |

They're blocking direct image links. The site's a bit slow for me so I grabbed all the Sega 8-bit pictures so we can all get at them quickly and easily:

I compared the board photo with my Japanese SMS. The obvious things that stick out are that the Korean one has clone parts (which is exactly why there were Korean variants, they had to be domestically-made) and that its board revision has several components - the 315-5297 I/O (?) chip, YM2413 and one or two other chips - missing and there's a surface-mount type chip with loads of pins in place of the '5297. This makes me wonder if it supports YM2413, especially since I can't immediately find a Korean game with FM music. The interesting part is that apart from that, everything else is totally identical - they didn't bother trying to rearrange the parts that were unchanged, so there's just big empty spaces on the board in the relevant places.

It's interesting how the consoles follow the international design, but the cartridges follow the Japanese design. Or did both of those console designs make it back into Japan? The history is a little confusing for me there.
Nezuji :) |

Japan eventually got the Master System I (with extra features such as built-in rapid fire and built-in FM sound chip). |

Oh my god .. this Psycho Fox box! It's my new graal.
Where did you found those Kenneth? Collecting Korean stuff seems like a daunting task. Interesting that they have the same Kung Fu Kid/Shinobi/The Ninja compilation as in Brasil. |

I found those pictures on the korean forum I've posted two posts upper.
Just searched for all the posts containing "gam boy" "aladin boy" in korean and picked up the picture. There are loaaaaaaads of megadrive stuff (I've even seen pics of megadrive in a yard sale lol) but for the sms, not so much. I've send some mails to big collectors (one of the guys had 5 of the 15 rarest japanese megadrive games and some nice raritys on many systems), but didn't have much response for the moment. For what I have seen, they have generally 5 or 6 japanese games for 1 korean release. But it seems that many games where released in korea. |

This is funny, here we have a picture of "Streets of rage", but I'm certain that I saw a picture of "Bare knuckle" somewhere in that museum.

What are the games that are shown in the booklet? It's kind of wierd how Samsung and Hyundai produced the SMS in Korea... |

Hyundai distributed the NES in Korea, rather than the SMS. It's because Japanese companies were, for a long time, not allowed to operate in South Korea, so they had to license their wares to Korean companies instead. |

The games in the booklet are Gen/MD games. (Bad Omen/Devilish upper-left, Shining Force lower-left, Langrisser lower-right) |
