Mark III Telecon Pack
Post Posted: Fri Dec 31, 2004 4:14 am
Here's an eBay auction for one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36617&item=815824...

So what exactly does it do? Does it send signals to the TV so you don't have to plug in an RF unit? Or is it wireless by way of controllers? Either way, it looks rather cool.

Yeah I think thats it. Well thats what it looks like anyway.

I heard something a while ago about how certain games were broad cast over the air waves and could only be playable at certain times while they were being broadcast, just like a TV show, so maybe..........?. Then again I think that might have been for the NES.

Yeah, it's a wireless RF unit. Not very practical, but VERY cool looking.

I would have to disagree and say it would be very practical. I would rather have a little antenna coming out of my Master System and a reciever on my TV than a wire that I always trip over. I had to replace that wire 3 times because someone would trip over it and it would stop working.

They look cool as f*ck, but would it even be able to get a signal on non-Japanese TVs?
That same seller has a bunch of other nice Mk3 stuff up aswell, btw.

I gotta admit I never even thought about trying the Telecon Pack. I think that RF signals are compatible across all NTSC system, so it should work. On PAL system I don't know.

I'd rather play Mark III on RGB than RF anyway. But I'll have to test that beauty someday.

I believe the japanese RF signal has the sound carrier placed on a higher frequency than the american one, therefore you'll get either picture or sound, but not both.

Of course, RGB is much preferable (though I thought RGB was a europe only thing)

Just thought I'd chime in with the details, being the seller of this item n all. =)

RF signals use the same method for transmission in every territory, but they're totally incompatible as the frequencies are different. Just as a Japanese MS broadcasts on channel ~96 in North America similar problems will be encountered with this unit.

As a collector's piece it's pretty valuable, as a functional piece of equipment it's probably not so.

Not beautiful pictures, but since there are too few on the net I'd rather post those.

You still have the power cord though, and since in most homes the power outlet is next to the TV, the telecon doesn't really do much apart from look cool.

What kind of connection does it have at the TV end? When attempting to connect my Japanese SMS by RF, I could get a black-and-white silent picture on my PAL TV but it did need to be tuned to a VHF band channel instead of the UHF ones that are actually used in this country. In other words, if it's RF, you might need a TV that supports the right frequency to see anything.

Additional useless information: an analogue RF TV tuner card would probably be able to accept it perfectly, mine (aged and not plugged into my PC) let me choose any PAL/NTSC standard I liked from a huge list.

As a child, my SMS never lived next to the TV, I had to connect it up every time. This would make an easy alternative to having to mess around with wires at the back of the TV. For bonus points, wire some IR LEDs into it and make it double as a Wii Sensor Bar...

(Guys, note that I revived an old topic when posting those pictures, so original poster might not read this)

At TV end it's regular antenna plug. Not familiar with those (never used them for a console) but it seems to be the same on all consoles I saw. It's the block you see on lower right. The two holes are for plugin the recepter, and then it has a cable to plug as antenna.

I tried this sort of thing with my SMS 2, I hooked up the RF output to a 75ohm converter thingamjig then I placed a long length of tinned coper wire on a breadboard. I managed to get a colour picture with sound albeit very fuzzy. And I could just receive the signal on the TV in my bros bedroom.

Other crazy things I have done was stick a laser pointer to the end of my SMS light phaser to use as a sight. It looked good but didn't help much.

Wouldn't you be able to use this device with an NTSC TV? my TV covers both and you can select the sound mode you want to use as well.

Probably. IIRC, Japanese channels 1 and 2 correspond to channels 95 and 96 in the US.

"Something on the box about SG-1000" usually means "Not compatible with the SG-1000"... anyway, this thing needs the AV port and if your SG-1000 has one of those, you can already connect it by SCART.

The best place to look would probably be Yahoo Auctions Japan.

Hi... so has anyone found a way to get the telecon pack to work on a UK PAL or USA TV yet?

Regards
