Hello, All!

I have released MasterGear 4.6.11 for Android this morning, a new version of my Sega MasterSystem and GameGear emulator:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fms.mg

This release is based on the latest MasterGear 4.6 for Windows and Linux, published earlier this week. It includes a new, separate option for linear image scaling. Finally, MasterGear is on $2.99 sale at Google Play this week.

As you remember, I had to disable cheat features to avoid Google staff banning MasterGear from the store. You can easily reenable cheats though by downloading this file to your Downloads folder:

http://fms.komkon.org/EmuAndroid/MasterGear-Cheats.zip

See below for all the changes.

ALL CHANGES:
* Based on the latest MasterGear 4.6 sources.
* Added separate option for linear image interpolation.

Enjoy!

Hello, All!

I have published MasterGear 4.7, a new version of my Sega MasterSystem, GameGear, SG-1000, and SC-3000 emulator for Windows and Linux:

http://fms.komkon.org/MG/ -- homepage
http://fms.komkon.org/MG/MG47-Windows-bin.zip -- free Windows binary
http://fms.komkon.org/MG/MG47-Ubuntu-x86-bin.tgz -- free Linux binary

The new MasterGear adds a simple, CPU-based linear interpolation scaling algorithm, for cases where using hardware-based scaling is unfeasible. The Windows version also adds support for drag'n'drop: you can now drag supported files onto application window in order to load them. The Android version of MasterGear is currently on $2.99 sale at Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fms.mg

If you like MasterGear on the desktop, please, consider buying the Android version to support further MasterGear development. See below for all the changes made in this week's release.

ALL CHANGES:
* Added CPU-based simple linear scaling algorithm.
* Added file drag'n'drop support to MG-Windows.
* Added "-linear" command line option to MG-Linux.

Have fun!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fms.mg

This release is based on the latest MasterGear 4.7 for Windows and Linux, published last week. It adds a simple CPU-based linear interpolation scaler, used when GPU-based linear interpolation is unfeasible. Just today, MasterGear is on $2.99 sale at Google Play.

As you remember, I had to disable cheat features to avoid Google staff banning MasterGear from the store. You can easily reenable cheats though by downloading this file to your Downloads folder:

See below for all the changes.

ALL CHANGES:
* Based on the latest MasterGear 4.7 sources.
* Refactored scaling and special effects framework.
* Added simple CPU-based linear interpolation algorithm.

Enjoy!

Hello, All!

I've just published MasterGear 4.7.1 for Android, a new version of my Sega MasterSystem, GameGear, and SG-1000 emulator:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fms.mg -- at Google Play

https://fms.komkon.org/EmuAndroid/ -- homepage

Starting this November, Google no longer allows Android apps to access files on Android10+ devices, outside app's sandbox. All storage access is now supposed to be done via something called "Storage Access Framework".

I had to make major changes to MasterGear in order to comply with the new regulations. If you have a newer Android10+, you will see the list of storage volumes in the File Selector. Once you click on a volume, the app may ask you for permission to access it. Otherwise, things should work the same as before. If you find any new problems with the app though, please, report them to the support group or email me directly. See below for all the changes.

ALL CHANGES:
* Refactored app to comply with Google's latest ban on file I/O.
* On Android 10+, all file access is now done via content providers.
* Content is copied to a temporary folder for use, changes moved back on exit.
* You may have to give app separate permission to read each storage location.

Have fun!

Hello, All!

I've released MasterGear 4.7.2 for Android, a new version of my Sega MasterSystem, GameGear, and SG-1000 emulator:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fms.mg -- at Google Play
https://fms.komkon.org/EmuAndroid/ -- homepage

For this release, I have fixed a bunch of bugs introduced by the refactoring. The app should once again run on Android 4.2+ devices and handle file names with parentheses and spaces. Several possible crash sources have also been fixed.

* Fixed several crash sources that popped up after refactoring.
* Fixed compatibility with Android 4.2/4.3.
* Fixed handling of spaces and parentheses in "content://" URIs.
* Fixed list of volumes in "Change Folder" dialog.
* Fixed "Change Folder" functionality.
* Fixed leaked dialog window on app exit.
* Added rounded corners to legacy icons.

In somewhat related news, VGBAnext, my universal GBA, GBC, and NES emulator, is on $2.99 sale at Google Play for the next couple of days:

Hello, All!

I've published MasterGear 4.7.3 for Android, a new version of my Sega MasterSystem, GameGear, and SG-1000 emulator:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fms.mg -- at Google Play

https://fms.komkon.org/EmuAndroid/ -- homepage

This release fixes File Selector UI on newer AndroidTV devices and also fixes opening Sega files from external apps, such as file managers. I have also enabled adding home screen shortcuts for newer Android devices.

* Fixed file selection UI on newer AndroidTV devices.
* Fixed opening files from File Managers and other apps.
* Enabled adding home screen shortcuts on newer devices.

(this is solved, see edits at the end)

How do cheats work in Android MasterGear for Game Gear? I found the "Cheat codes" and "New cheat" menu items, but no matter what I type in that box I'm returned to the "Cheat codes" menu with no change. Is it expecting Game Gear Game Genie codes? Game Gear Pro Action Replay codes? Something else? And formatted how? Is there any way to paste the code from the clipboard? Is there any way to store the codes in a file?

Also, is there any way to activate the onscreen keyboard in order to type a cheat code in? My phone has a partial physical keyboard but the "alt" modifier needed for number entry doesn't work in this menu

Thanks for an awesome emulator!

edit: it was answered in an email, the exact format is documented here:

http://fms.komkon.org/EmuAndroid/#MasterGear
http://fms.komkon.org/EmuAndroid/#CheatCodes

Not sure yet how to overcome the leyboard limitations though, since I can't paste, can't open virtual keyboard, and also (because physical "alt" is ignored by MasterGear and my phone's physical keyboard only has letters without using the "alt" modifier) can't enter "-" or digits, only letters

edit 2: Another email and everything is solved! I hadn't realized MasterGear's own internal virtual keyboard (rather than an Android native one) could be enabled and used inside the settings menu

Both Pro Action Replay and Game Genie codes work, provided they are formatted as

XXX-XXX-XXX (Game Genie)
or
00HH-LLDD (PAR)

The punctuation must be exactly as given above ("-" and no other symbols, and no spaces)
