Hi all!

New member here, though I've been reading these forums for years.
Sega Master System was my first console and I always wanted to do something with it. Back when I first learned about tracking I tried Mod2PSG2, but only managed to do like one track with it, hah. But then later Shiru's VGM Music Maker hit and I started to learn it. I've been making FM tracks so far but now I finally wanted to do a PSG release:

Got to say that working with this chip is really, really hard. I had to transpose almost every track to the lowest possible key (these are all versions of my FM originals btw). What about the drums then? Sigh, lots and lots of channel juggling.. This was still a fun experiment, but not sure if I'll ever do another one, haha.

I tried to use all the noise modes and stuff like tone+noise drums on different tracks. Hope there's something worth listening, any comments would be appreciated. Thanks. =)

Thanks TmEE!

I had one more track for this one too, but I noticed too late that the release was over the 90min limit so I couldn't include it... I made it with the classic 3 square waves and basic noise drums setup, but with added tones to punch up the drums. It sounds nice, haha, maybe I'll have to think about PSG Series 2 after all.. :) Will be much later though, I want to do some FM now.

I like how some of these tracks are close to or actually better than the originals, particularly "Ikuinen Noe", I like the PSG version much better.

...And here it actually is now: (or isn't as I can't link :D, but it's there on my bandcamp site)

I thought I figured out all the tricks last time, but there were still some I learned working on this. New thing to me was that advanced noise mode could be used for a bassdrum, I guess the only way to actually have a bassdrum with bass on SN? But it's tricky to use, it will cut off another channel and the sound it produces isn't that pleasant. Hard to make it smooth/soft rather than really dirty. In some tracks I layered that with additional square kick, so.. 3-channels for a drum sound. Haha.

Another cool thing (and at times frustrating when unwanted) is how you can detune 2 square waves apart from each other to create a phasing effect. You can hear it clearly on "Silent Invasion", right at the beginning. It's used on some leads and basslines on other tracks too to create some little variation to the sound.

Enjoy, thank you for listening!

I see you're registered over at CMO, but you never post. Why don't you share your stuff there? Jredd posted "frequency" which was really great! But that was in 2012. :P

Really nice stuff. I love what you did with the drums, and you have a couple of beautiful bass sounds, too.

Have you ever considered releasing the songs in .vgm form?

Yeah, it's an old account I never used.. Not sure if anyone there would be interested in PSG music though. Hm, maybe I could try it.

Pretty sure I will, but not yet because I'm still making updates here and there. I want them to be as perfect as possible. PSG is nicer to work with, it's mostly just getting the instruments and volume levels down. But FM is a whole nother beast..

I'm very happy to hear that about my drums and bass sounds. Thank you guys for the comments!

I like both versions of "Assembled in 1987", but I think the PSG one is a little better than the FM.

I love the sound of pure 8-bit in the morning.

Yeah, I think I'll agree with the PSG version being the better with Assembled In 1987. It just works so well with PSG.

Thank you!
