Majesco Game Gear press release
Post Posted: Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:59 pm
While snooping around I found the press release from Majesco for their re-released GameGear:

Quote
February 21, 2001
EDISON, NJ, February 21, 2001 - Further strengthening its position in the handheld arena, Majesco, Inc., today announced it has acquired rights from Sega Toys to re-manufacture the classic Sega Game Gear portable gaming console. The system will be available at Toys R Us stores and online at www.toysrus.com and will be value priced at $29.99. Majesco additionally announced plans to support the system by publishing original Game Gear games, also value priced at $14.97.

Originally introduced in 1990, Game Gear features portable gameplay on a full color, hi-resolution 3.2 inch backlit LCD screen. Games display 32 blazing colors for arcade-quality graphics and vivid animation with 4-layer audio and 24k RAM.

Majesco will manufacture and publish 10 games for the Game Gear system. These titles include: Disney's The Lion King, Aladdin, The Jungle Book, Deep Duck Trouble, Caesars Palace, Super BattleTank, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Spinball,Pac Man, and Ms. Pac Man.

It really didn't cost much at all, did it?

INteresting, they must have had some success since I have identified more games that had Majsco re-releases than their original press release states would be available.

They put Frogger on the box art but never released it. Presumably the box art was finalised earlier, but by the time of the press release it was not mentioned. I believe there's another unreleased game on the box? I see an old thread mentioning 10 Pin Bowling and Q*Bert.

Some of the Majesco games were just old US stock. I think I saw some Rise of the Robots in the shops at the time.

Yep thank you for that my friend. I love that Frogger game in my collection. If there is prototype box art available for it I have a good friend who makes video game boxes and he could make it for me to house the cart if someone has a link to the box art.

Does a scan of the back of the box exist online?

Super Battletank was a new title that Majesco published too. I guess it was finished but not released back in the '90s.

Yep that's why it's the only Majesco title that doesn't have an original release to track down. Good GG trivia question! ;)

I'm currently researching the Majesco GameGear for an article. Here's the reverse of the box, showing Frogger and 10 Pin Bowling, for those who have never seen it before:

Will the article be in Retro Gamer?

Seems odd to speculate about Frogger when the (compete) prototype has been dumped for years. The screenshot on the Majesco box is the wrong resolution and probably comes from some other version, I thought it was assumed that Majesco were hoping to release the 1991 game.

Majesco has discontinued the Genesis 3 and the Game Gear long ago, but it seems nobody ever mentions when did they pulled the plug.

Isn't it strange that the Genesis received a major redesign while the Game Gear is quite similar to the original model?

I'd guess Majesco weren't up to redesigning the Genesis hardware, and instead manufactured something Sega had already done.

It's probably the Genesis version.

It seems to be the middle screenshot from the Genesis version's box:
