It's not a demonstrator if the thing in the top right is a coin slot... It's for love hotels.

I'm sure this is Bock's dream: to be able to play SMS games while getting a b...it of privacy in a love hotel. ;-)

Well, I would still call this a demonstrator, because essentially you cannot play for a long time on those machines (I suppose it's something like 100 yens gets you 5 minutes of game play).

Sorry for lacking on love hotels culture :) but is there a reason why this also could not be used in other places such as shops?

I won it for 5万円, still very expensive but cheaper than I thought it would go (that's roughly 340 euros).

Well, as far as I know, shop demonstrators don't charge people money, while the systems I've seen in, erm, hotels and spas charge a fee to play a game.

What about the Sega Soft Desk 10 (see http://smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9026 ) , also a coin-up machine ?

There's a thread on Mixi @ http://mixi.jp/view_bbs.pl?id=9017862 if you can read it.

Speaking of Mixi, is there a way one can get an invite?

I purchased a second similar system. The cartridge selection and coin system is different (I presume like arcade system it could be refitted or replaced easily).
Waiting for them and hoping that both are working and functional.

The Fantasy Zone PS2 collection include a picture of a flyer for the Sega Game Box 9.
Notice that the unit in the picture is slightly different than the two found above.

Also attached are some pictures I took of my units before moving out of Japan.

Notice that the version of SDI inside the Sega Game Box 9 package is a black cartridge whereas the regular version is a white cartridge. This is the only known occurrence of a Sega Mark III cartridge color variation.

Also, I found ~$70 worth of 100 yens coins in one of the machine :)

Cool, were the ROMs identical to the retail releases?

Yes all the cartridge ROMs were identical. I haven't yet dumped the actual BIOS of the systems.
