In response to James Costello's article on the Sega Light Phaser:
http://segacollect.blogspot.com/2008/07/sega-light-phaser-is-one-of-most.html I have uploaded some pictures of the original Japanese Zillion Gun toy below. |

Yes it's mine. Feel free to use any of my pictures. Everything is now packed so I can't take better pictures for several weeks.
I'm not sure about how the designs were used in the anime (the original Japanese one, that is). |

In the Anime cartoon the gun resembled the sms phaser in the early episodes, but then changed later on.

I have read that in the early episodes of AKAI KOUDAN ZILLION sega sponsored the manga, so there was the use of sega's character OPA OPA as well as the sega light phaser in the manga itself.
However in the middle of the manga sega discontinued its sponsorship, that is why the design of the zillion phaser changed... |

I just saw this thread and learned so much !
Zillion was one of my favorites games, and I love its music. I didnt know there was an anime, neither an album ! Thanks to YT SMSpower channel, I can listen to them. But I wonder, which has been released first ? I mean did they make the game from the anime ? Anyway, hearing those songs bring me cheers. Excellent ! |

Game: released May 27, 1987
Anime: aired April 12, 1987 They were probably developed simultaneously. |

Considering that sega was the sponsor, it's quite posible that they were developed at the same time

Even though Sega stopped sponsoring Opa Opa still remained as a character in the series.
The series has some loop holes, like in an early episode when it was mentioned how the Zillion gun could never be changed because it was too complex. Later on they changed it to the version above, not without Sega participation though (according to the wiki at least). And if I remember correctly, the ammo was too complex to duplicate, but they somehow managed to work around that too. And the most important rule of all: If any other person than the White Knights would fire the phaser that person would just drop dead. No explanation given. Getting a bit off-topic but worth mentioning, It's kind of a sad story too. The Nozha is actually fighting to survive as a species. If they fail they all die out. And while thousands of innocent people are dying, the main character doesn't give a crap about anything but peeking up ladies' skirts. I know I'm taking this too serious, it being a cartoon and all, but at the same time the story can get pretty deep if you analyse it enough. |
