Resource Workshop tips
(a.k.a. bug workarounds)

  1. 256 colour bitmaps
There is an option to "save with default device colours", ie. to mess up your palette when you save. Unfortunately, this is permanently on, even when it's switched off. To get a 256-colour bitmap, save it as a .bmp file, open that in Resource Workshop, copy the resource (from the list - try right-clicking), and paste it into your chosen program, delete the bitmap you want to replace, and rename the one you just pasted with the old one's name.
  2. 16 colour palette swapping
This is the same "default device colours" problem again. I find that the light and dark greys, and sometimes dark yellow and black, sometimes swap with each other. You can either use the above workaround, or, because it's a swapping thing, you can sometimes just copy, paste and save, and the colours are swapped back.
  3. Disappearing windows
You may find that when you restore Resource Workshop after it has been minimised, it fails to draw its MDI child windows. The only way to get them back is to force them to redraw. If the child window was maximised, click on the restore button in the top-right. Otherwise, press Alt and - to get the child window's control menu, and minimise or maximise it.
  4. Image editing
Don't bother trying to edit images in Resource Workshop. Save it to a file and edit in a proper image editor (I'd suggest Paint Shop Pro), then put it back in RW as above. An added bonus is that you can open the saved image when you want to make more changes, and this saved image acts as a backup in case the modified file gets replaced (eg. when you reinstall a program).
