I managed to find Sanritsu Denki's website:
http://www.sanritsudenki.com/

If someone could give me a better translation of the company history than the online translators, that would be appreciated.

Due to the bad layout, I can't place all events in time, but here goes:

1973.12: Company founded as Sanritsu Denki K.K. with 10 000 000 yen in capital.
Under the name Anritsu (sp?) K.K. Kaishakyôryokukôjô (company cooperative factory) it starts to make communications equipment.

1974?: Sanritsu makes vending machines for tobacco, rice, magazines and parking tickets.

1977.03: Sanritsu enters the amusement machine industry, begins making video game machines.

1979.06: Capital increases to 55 000 000 yen.
A development section is set up in Machida-shi, Morino 5-50.
Hewlett Packard 64000 software development systems are introduced.
Sanritsu starts developing micro computer software and hardware.

1982.09?: An agreement about joint development with America's Atari Inc. is made.

Production facilities are moved to Gunma prefecture, production of larger machines is intiated.

New company headquarters are built.

Development section is moved to headquarters, new development staff recruited.

The "new media" business, which is supposed to grow bigger in the future, is investigated.

I'll leave the rest out, since it has little relevance to games.

I'm sorry, this page renders too badly in my browser, so placing it on a timescale is not possible for me. Does it look good for you?

- It looks messed up in Opera and Firefox. Just a bad layout, I guess. Thanks for translating the page, though.

- I found an "Anritsu Corporation" that's involved with communications here:
http://www.anritsu.co.jp/E/corp/profile.asp
Probably not related, but I can't say for sure.

- It's interesting that there's no mention of Sanritsu's relationship with Sega, but I guess that part of their history was spun off along with SIMS. I didn't even know Sanritsu had anything to do with Atari.

Actually, I'm not certain that it's the right Sanritsu this time either.

They do the same thing, so I'm sure it's the Anritsu they refer to. BTW, doesn't the Anritsu logo look familiar in a strange way?

I'm absolutely positive it is. Roughly the same address that's on their website is on the back of MD Fatman.

〒229-0037 神奈川県相模原市
         千代田2-6-23

http://www.vgmuseum.com/scans/mega.html

I don't get the Anritsu/Sanritsu thing. Did Sanritsu work under/with/for Anritsu? I don't think they're part of the same corporate family.

You might be interested in this:
http://www7.tok2.com/home/bgr/words/sanritsu/sanritsudenki.html

I don't know if it's supposed to be a letter or what. I had someone else look at it. He translated the timeline, but said there wasn't anything interesting in the rest. Apparently, Noboru Machida was the manager of the development engineering department at the time, going by my online translator.

idrougge, did you happen to submit SIMS as the port developer for MD Bonanza Bros., G-Loc, and Shadow Dancer?

As far as I can tell, Developer Table got the SMS and MD versions mixed up. Sanritsu/SIMS worked on SMS Bonanza Bros., Shadow Dancer, and G-Loc. MD G-Loc wasn't even done in Japan. It was done by Probe in the UK.

EDIT: May I also add Alien Storm. Sanritsu/SIMS did the SMS version, not the MD version. They also did not do the MD version of Wrestle War. It was done by the same team that did FC Chuka Taisen (from what company, I don't know). And I want proof they did the NeoGeo->SS ports.

A Call for Questioning
Post Posted:  Mon Nov 20, 2006 11:42 pm Reply with quote

1. Scratch Golf (GG)

Upon looking at the credits, it would appear that maybe it was outsourced.

Planner               Hin Denei
Programmer            Kawancha
                      M. Wada
                      Yoshida
Graphics              K. Katoku

I have not seen most of these names on other Sanritsu/SIMS games.

2. Shadow Dancer (SMS)

Graphic               Yatsute Miro
                      Gaga
Program               Masahiro Wakayama (M. Wakayama)
Sound                 K.T.
Manual                May
Special               Hagi Chan
                      H. Sekiguchi

I'm pretty sure Wakayama was with Sega. Others do have Sanritsu ties, however. "Gaga" did graphics for Line of Fire (SMS). "May" is from Sanritsu (again, pretty sure). "Hagi Chan" might be "T. Hagiwara."

3. Various MD Games

I feel it necessary to highlight the following MD (and one MCD) games:

Dynamite Duke

It's pretty clear to me that these five games were done by roughly the same team. But what is that team in relation to Sanritsu/SIMS?

a) A separate team at Sanritsu/SIMS that worked on mainly 16-bit stuff
b) A team from Sega that transferred to SIMS
c) A team from an outside company (outsourcee)

Someone posted this at Game Developer Research Institute:

Apparently, the ROM for Vattle Guice (Game Boy) contains graphic data from Putt & Putter.

Read the discussion here.

Sorry if this is a bit oftopic but I thought I better mention it at least.
Tose... they have made 1100 games for most major game companies and almost never take the credit for them. I guess it's really hard to get to the bottom of who made what from them

We're well aware of them. ;) There aren't any known links with them to Sega 8-bit stuff...though they supposedly did the Dragonball fighter on the MD (and the SFC ones as well which are virtually identical).

They've worked on a whole mess of NES games we know of, though, many more than were initially listed over at Developer Table. Additionally, we have a preliminary list of 50 (yes, exactly) SNES titles they may have worked on. All this is circumstantial, though, primarily based on shared code, sound, and graphics.

In order for the main point of this post to make sense, allow me to explain what we're doing at GDRI - it's the next step in game developer research - code comparisons. My colleague Dran/Dimitri/DJ Squarewave has on hand a program which was developed especially for GDRI that will compare two different files and find what code is shared between them. He will then search for that shared code in other ROMs.

Dimitri did such a comparison between two games we've determined are by Sanritsu/SIMS - Aerial Assault and Wanted.

One particular string came up with these results:

GG:
George Foreman's KO Boxing
J.League Soccer: Dream Eleven
Kick & Rush / Tengen World Cup Soccer
Tempo Jr.
SMS:
Aerial Assault
Air Rescue
Alien Storm
Assault City
Bomber Raid
Dynamite Duke
E-Swat
G-Loc
George Foreman's KO Boxing
Golfamania
James "Buster" Douglas Knockout Boxing/Heavyweight Champ
Line of Fire
Putt & Putter / Minigolf
Slap Shot
Super Tetris
Tennis Ace / Super Tennis
Tom & Jerry: The Movie
Tecmo World Cup '93
Wanted

The false positive here seems to be Super Tetris, since that's just a shoddy Korean game (at least I thought it was).

Another string came up with the following:

GG:
Aladdin
Fred Couples Golf
George Foreman's KO Boxing
Out Run
Psychic World
SMS:
Aerial Assault
Air Rescue
Aladdin
Alien Storm
Alien Syndrome
Assault City
Back to the Future Part III
Bomber Raid
Dynamite Duke
E-SWAT
Forgotten Worlds
G-LOC
Gain Ground
George Foreman's KO Boxing
Great Volleyball
Line of Fire
Mahjong Sengoku Jidai
Psychic World
Tecmo World Cup '93
Tennis Ace / Super Tennis
Tom & Jerry: The Movie
Wanted

Back to the Future Part III is definitely a false positive. Great Volleyball probably is, too.

Nothing we didn't already know, but it does add to the evidence.

I have recently confirmed that "Shura no Mon" (MD) is a SIMS game. The voice actor is "Fumi." Assuming 1) this is the same "Fumi" that worked on numerous SMS/GG games and 2) all the voice samples are male, judging by the sound test, then "Fumi" is a male and not Fumie Kumatani, as has been previously conjectured. Of course, there is the possibility this is not THAT "Fumi."

It looks like "Slap Shot" was actually a port of a System E arcade game called "Slap Shooter." I don't know if Sanritsu did that version. It's not emulated in MAME, either.
