I'll post more in a few weeks (I'm on holiday now) but we will of course have competitions again this year, in the categories development, music and hacks. Usual rules apply, deadline 27th March.

---------------------------------------------

Is that square wave wedding bells I hear? It's time for a very special SMS Power! Competition - it is the website's 20th anniversary! Yes, SMS Camp started on 27th March 1997 and that is now 20 years ago, which means we are all very old. However, we have something almost as exciting: our dear leader, Bock, is getting married soon and we all know the best wedding gift is something 8-bit and Sega!

So, let's have competitions with a suggested theme of romance and love!

Coding competition

Write something - a demo, a game, or anything else - that runs on on a Sega 8-bit home console. You can write it any way you like - assembly, devkitSMS, z88dk, ZX Basic, or even one of the "game makers" like SAM. Don't worry, we will judge you on your choice!

Music competition

Compose some music for the sound chip(s) found in Sega 8-bit home consoles. Sneventracker, Mod2PSG2, xpmck, and various other options exist; there's even SMSM to control a Master System through MIDI.

*or*

Arrange some music from a Sega 8-bit home console game, for any instrument you like. Play the Alex Kidd theme on a sitar, give us the theme from Zillion on bagpipes, or something else. Medleys are often fun, for example.

Hacks competition

Use one of the game editors around - KiddEd seems to be in the lead, Tales is awesome, a few lesser-known ones are around - or just hack a game using the sheer power of writing code or even hex editing.

The small print

* Super-offensive or overly illegal content will get your entry rejected. Be nice.
* Entries should be either made for this competition, or substantially different to any earlier release.
* Coding entries must be in a format that works with a wide variety of emulators, i.e. raw ROM image or disk images. Tape images and wacky custom formats are no good.
* Hack entries must be either in a format like for coding entries, or in the form of an IPS patch. You must give details of the original file(s) your hack is based on.
* Music entries can be in any format you like, provided it's VGM or MP3. You are welcome to also provide the same music in some other format alongside it.

How to enter

competition@smspower.org

You should receive an automatic response when it is received. Please make sure:

  • Attach the file(s), don't link to RapidPirateUpload.com
  • Mention the word "competition" in your subject line
  • Please include:

    • Your forum name
    • The entry title
    • Any description you'd like to include with your entry

  • For music, say if it's original or a cover (and what of); including cover art makes you 20% more awesome.
  • Of course, including source (for both music and code) is great.

Is the coding category open for assembly coding this year?

Yes, I'm inclined to put all homebrew work in the same category (C vs. asm and whatever else there is).

yes, we shouldn't make code subcategories IMHO - no use.

I'd suggest to update the "How to try the entries (for newbies)" post to another emulator, since the Kega website has been down for months.

Decided to try to make a small entry this year. Coded whole last weekend. Hopefully I'll finish in time.

Awesome Maxim!
BTW: as I found out last year, unfortunately it seems if you code something using z88dk then chances are almost certain that it won't run on a Sega 8-bit home console i.e. the real hardware! Therefore, having a go at devkitSMS this year...!

Yes - managed to submit my entry today... took 4x attempts as I had to remove or rename BAT / EXE / LIB / LNK files in my zipped attachment! Got there in the end :)

It's GMail underneath, hide your dodgy stuff in a renamed zip!

Three entries so far, so there's all to play for! (I'm not paying a lot of attention this year, sorry for not posting stuff yet.)

Actually, how is this done?!? I had a quick look at 2016 devkitSMS Coding Competition entry SuperUwol-SG-201611191411-src.zip and see that there are many BAT and EXE files that are not renamed after unzipped e.g. compile.bat folder2c.exe etc. I assume entries like these were also email attached to competition@smspower.org

Just rename your file from .zip to .whatever and google won't recognize it as zip and therefore not look at its contents.

Thanks Calindro. Re-uploaded ZIP file as *.src.zip.TXT and accepted no problem.
I take it the Admins will rename *.src.zip upon 2017 Competition page submission.

I look forward to try out all the various creations, but must regretfully admit that I do not have some stuff of my own to contribute with in the compo this year.

Same here. My new project is nowhere near a presentable state, so I'll submit nothing this year, but I can't wait to try the other contributions.

Umm my game is finished!

The only thing it lacks is it doesnt compile under speed optimization in sdcc so ill have to do (even) more code optimization. Also, i want to do a cover case. Three days. After that, three days sleeping :)

27 March AoE is actually noon UTC on the 28th so no problem ;)

@eruiz00: it doesn't compile? Is that an SDCC bug?

It does compile, but it does not run. It happens when lcode is bigger than around 7axx. I suppose ita related to sms header included. Its not a big problem. I dont see great improvement with speed optimization set to on.

wow, 32 KB of code? I wonder what you're doing in there!
(currently "Weka Invaders" is 2700 lines long and it's just over 20 KB - one of it actually taken by LUTs...)

Maxim: no placeholder topics this year? :|
I loved to see them accumulate in the last few days... and also to speculate on actual title entries, I'd love to see those again...

Then this year there won't be an entry from Kagesan, nor from hang-on, which means more chances for others to get first place but we're going to miss two strong competitors. On the other hand, we're going to have a few new entrants, and this looks promising. And I'm curious about the RETICA warship, I can't imagine what those terrible guys can put on the table :D

Good compo everyone! :)

Can I present my hack of Sonic the Hedgehog Game Gear Edition? I altered all the Sonic's sprites, so I would be in hacking category.

I'm also not competing this year. :( I'm trying to focus my limited SMS time on Monkey Lad and turning it into a proper game.

I'm looking forward to playing all the entries. :)

Doing optimization have found about 0x0300 bytes free, so i have done a larger ending and an additional boss. Two songs more arrived (im in love with mod2psg) so the rom is now 224kb!

I am getting old, these all nighters really take it out of me :S Oh to be 20 years old again :p

I am not getting notification for entry. I suspect it might be size issue. Could you confirm you got it.

I followed advice from Calindro (hence my update) and simply re-zipped all files as is i.e. including all EXEs LIBs and BATs files but renamed the "src" ZIP file as *.src.zip.TXT and email went thru no problems...

Rant: every year I get MAD sorting through submissions because half of you are not providing all the necessary information:

- A clear name for the entry
- Your forum name (we can't always tell who is who from real name)
- An IPS file for patches
- PNG screenshots are also welcome!

It takes longer to process them with missing information when we have to guess titles! Not mentioning the obvious typos in titles sometimes. :)

Please next year be a little more careful with your entries e-mail to make it faster to get the submissions up <3

It might help to mention the requirement for a clear name for the entry in the original post. :P
