Competition 2014: status thread
Post Posted: Mon Jan 06, 2014 6:35 pm
Well, it's a new year so that means there's a new competition!

Ultra-short rules: the same as every year.

Slightly longer rules:

Deadline is 27th March 2014. You may choose to interpret that in any reasonable way.

There are two competitions: coding and music.

Coding competition

Write something that runs on a Sega 8-bit home system.

Music competition

Make some music that either uses the sound chip(s) from an Sega 8-bit home system, or is an arrangement of music from commercial software for that system.

The small print
Super-offensive or overly illegal content will get your entry rejected. Be nice.
Entries should be either made for this competition, or substantially different to any earlier release.
Coding entries must be in a format that works with a wide variety of emulators, i.e. raw ROM image or disk images. Tape images and wacky custom formats are no good.
Music entries can be in any format you like, provided it's VGM or MP3. You are welcome to also provide the same music in some other format alongside it.

Prizes
Discuss below. Ideally, someone else can organise that...

Copy paste from last year:

Email competition entries to:

competition@smspower.org

You should receive an automatic response when it is received. To make sure you do:

- Attach the file(s), don't link to RapidPirateUpload.com
- Mention the word "competition" in your subject line

Please include your forum name and any description you'd like to include with your entry. For music, say if it's original or a cover (and what of); including cover art makes you 20% more awesome. Of course, including source (for both music and code) is great.

We already got one entry!

How do you know that the other entry isn't an even bigger piece of rubbish? :) Go for it.

I'll post something for the coding competition,
but i don't know if it will be accepted.

It needs an external electronic part (an homemade multitap) because it's a 4 players game (battle game).
on RH, without the multitap, you're only controlling the 1st player.
On emulators, you can't really play it, you're moving the 4 players at -nearly- the same time, unless someone update his emulator...

We'll accept it, but I think you'll take a hit in the voting if it doesn't work nicely on the software/hardware people already have. Even if it was a conventional 2-player game, you'd take a hit because you need an extra person to actually play it properly.

I will have a last minute music submission. An original vanilla PSG tune. Can the music be posted elsewhere once the voting has started ?
Like "if you like this please take a look here and give a vote and also check out the other entries" ...?

You are welcome to post it elsewhere. If you want to link back then please link to the competitions forum and avoid suggesting that they vote just for you, e.g. say "if you like this then please take a look here and join in the voting".

In the "How to" sticky, I wrote:

Quote
Please vote for all entries of a particular type, to make things fair. We will delete suspicious votes.

Understood :)

I'll have an entry ready sometime tomorrow. My tracker cannot output VGM (yet) so I can only provide MP3 and such.
I'll host a FLAC and OGG on my server for the quality junkies.

The index page says the deadline is in 2 hours and 36 minutes from now. I actually thought it's less, so I shoot off the email just now :)
I wonder if you can still post updates after sending the email? Probably not.

The countdown is based on the server's clock, I think it's in France.

You can send updates and the deadline is probably going to be in about 22 hours from now when I will have some time to do the necessary work. It's not uncommon to send bugfixes after voting starts, anyway.

Music entries posted and unlocked! It seems our YouTube playlist embedding is broken, but that only affects the http://www.smspower.org/Competitions/Music-2014 page.

Voting finished, by the way. I have gone through and removed the most dodgy voting, and votes for self (note that some votes for self were beneficial, some were detrimental).

The results are as follows:

Music:

1. (7.36) PSG Tune !
2. (6.90) Individual Bullet Patterns
3. (6.67) Metro-Cross

Coding:

1. (7.40) BOoM
2. (7.24) Minesweeper
3. (7.00) Porkopolis
4. (6.38) 2048 (Grz-)
5=. (6.33) 2048 (sanqui)
5=. (6.33) Colossal Cave Adventure SAM Edition
7. (6.06) Bruce Lee
8. (5.62) PSGlib Demo

Well done to all involved, and we look forward to seeing further development on these and new creations in future!

Big thanks to everyone !
and congrats to every challengers :)

Some good news :
Vingazole have nearly finished to convert all the Z88dk sms lib to SDCC (actually it already work), including bank switching.
He want to add some other functions and a music player (MML format - XPMCK lib - , PSG and FM).

When it will completely "done", the sms lib for SDCC will be available for everyone. I really hope it will "help" to make -more easily- some good homebrews for our dear Master System !

Damn, i completely forgot to develop and submit my entry for competition 2014... :(
When competition 2015 will start? as soon the competition 2014 ends? i guess that would be great if a thread about competition 2015 starts somehow? What do you all think?

No way, my track was rushed and not that impressive.
And i completely forgot there were results involved, haha.

But congrats to the winners, sorry that i haven't been around to comment on the entries, my life been hectic crazy lately.

btw, can i start with this one i submitted to msxdev-karoshi? i just need to adapt some small things in the code, and i hope it will run perfectly on sg1000: http://karoshi.auic.es/index.php/topic,2527.0.html (and using that neat header fixer from Haroldoop it will run on Master System as well! ;) )

and there at http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=9 we can’t start threads, so i have no idea how to submit it then... :S

We'll start accepting submissions early next year. If you really want to be early, submit it as described above, we will probably not change it for 2015.

Hmm. The small print above also applies... so releasing now will kind of make it ineligible. The point is for the competition entries to be mostly new when we start voting.

so i guess that these games there can be part of http://www.smspower.org/Homebrew/Index , outside the smspower competition, and when it starts i'll try to submit other new titles? what do you think?

First, I grant you edit rights. (Done.) Next, you make up a URL like http://www.smspower.org/Homebrew/Libreway-SG . When you get there, you click on the link to create the page from a template, which you then edit. You can create a forum thread if one doesn't already exist. You can also add arbitrary stuff to the page if you like by using the >><< wikicode to break out of the hidden part. Post in the Website section if you have more questions.
