Coconut Cake Caper

Hey, I made a new homebrew game! Well, I've made 2 other games in the last year, so I guess a new game isn't all that exciting anymore. This is another EGA shareware quality game called "The Coconut Cake Caper starring Bread and Butter".

You climb a giant cake to collect coins and avoid crooks. Graphics and game play are a bit more refined from the previous game (still 2 player simultaneous), but not too different. The big difference is that the foes appear in pseudo random patterns, so no two play-throughs of the game are likely to be exactly the same.

Also you can press button 2 to pause the game, so you don't have to get up, walk to the master system, and accidentally hit the reset button every other time. zip file has ROM for the game and README file.

Cool :) If it's not too awful, I'll put it in the UK meetup competition!

Thank you for introducing me to KeyStone Kapers. I had an Atari and never knew the game existed.

Hey, has anyone tried playing this game two player?

Well, I was testing this game again, as I was planning to put it on cartridge this year, and I found a graphical glitch. If you fight the boss as player 2 and player 1 is out of the game, the player 1 sprites get the player 2 tiles. So, nearly a year after the game was posted.... I found a bug. :(

The big is fixed. I've been playing the game as player 1 and player 2 for about a week since the fix and it seems alright. Enjoy.

Where are you getting the cartridge cases and boxes??? We're having a lengthy discussion on developing a simple homebrew cart here and getting the plastics produced is the biggest hurdle!

I think this use of "new" means "cartmods of unopened games".

I'm am aware of the thread, but I have not contributed ideas because I'm not sure my solutions would be 100% satisfactory to every one.

For the clam shell cases, I bought 'bit box' cases from the 'stone age gamer' web site. These are intended to be cases for NES cart, but the smaller SMS cart fits inside nicely. Plus it also has a plastic film to fit an 8x11 piece of paper as cover art. Unfortunately, these cases are taller and wider than original sega cases.

For the cartridge, I copied what SC-3000 surviors did. I used a product called smooth-on to make a mold of an old SMS case, then used the mold to make copies. However, this requires a huge learning curve, which I have not yet completed. I still have to sand the carts to get them to the right size and remove imperfections. It's OK for 20 or 30 carts, but my arms would fall off making 100 carts this way.

The new circuit board I use has no mapper. So you're limited to 32kb or 48kb. That's fine by me, as most of my games are small anyway. But it wouldn't do from someone with a 256kb game.

Again, I found something that works for me, but may not work for everyone else. If you need more info, let me know.

Sound interesting !

Can you show us your results with smooth-on products ?
(and maybe products references ?)

I will use the same method to make cartridges for BOoM.

I'll start a new post in this development forum for this. I'll add pics and links.

Love the concept! And am just wondering, if there was a way people could play a trial version or something, that would be great.

You can play the full version by downloading the .zip file from the first message in this thread. The ROM is in there. Let me know if you have trouble downloading it.

Thanks for the tip! Was wondering the same thing as Bruce here.
