Get sheet music from vgm?
Post Posted: Mon Apr 16, 2012 6:57 pm
Hello there,

Since a long time I wanted to play music from The Immortal on an instrument. So I need some sheet music to read it from.

I got the VGM, VGZ's. I tried converting them to MIDI with vgm2mid, but after loading them in a therefor appropiate program, the notation is kinda messed up (bad).

ABC notation is the aim, but I also wouldnt mind if it were to be converted to a module file format, so I can load it in a tracker.

Writing it myself while listening is not an option. I am a novice :)
Is there a way?

Thanks.

vgm2mid is the only option you have. Yes, most of the times the converted midi isn't optimal if you want to print the sheet music, I tried a few times in the past, too. You can use Mod Plug Tracker to convert the midi to a module format, but likewise, the results will be questionable.

If the sound engine of your game of choice is known you might look into a direct engine to midi converter, but there are very few engines right now where this is an option.

The Immortal uses as sound engine, or how it is listed, Electronic Arts/Rob Hubbard and elsewhere listed as Electronic Arts/Road Rash.
To me that sounded the same as "no converter" :). I looked quickly and a quick search did yield me to believe so.

Good suggestion. I tried this on some midi files and it needed some tinkering to say the least, but the notes can be read. This is an okey enough workaround for me. Thanks.
