Translation Release: LUNAR Walking School (Gamegear)
Post Posted: Thu Dec 17, 2009 10:08 pm

After apparently twelve long years, the combined efforts of Aeon Genesis and Some Good Shit Translations have finally produced a translation of the "lost" LUNAR title: Walking School for the gamegear. The patch now ready and the game can be enjoyed completely in English! Have fun, and don't forget to remind Professor Dadis of who you are every now and again.

1.About LUNAR
-------------
Everyone gather 'round, and let me tell you a tale of much
blood, sweat, and tears... but enough about my father's
laundry! This is an RPG, technically part of the LUNAR
series but only tangentially. There are several references
to the main series in the text, but it's pretty far removed
from the sprawling adventures and touching save-the-world
love stories that made Silver Star and Eternal Blue such
wonderful games.

Walking School, by comparison, is a lighthearted romp that
follows a few students at Magic Academy of Iyen, an island
that floats (on the SEA) and moves around. Series veterans
will be familiar with the Vane Magic Guild, which is on an
island that actually flies in the sky - this is *NOT* Vane
though it does get a mention late-game.

The scope of the adventure is much smaller, but the game
retains much of the friendly and spunky character interaction
that made the other games fun to read and fun to play. I hope
that the script meets the fans' standards!

2.Patch History
---------------
According to EsperKnight of the SGST team - the group who
originally had control of the project - this patch was
twelve years in the making! I only inherited it about a
year and a half ago, and most of that was spent editing
the text to bring it up to speed. (The actual romhacking
work was a pretty simple affair.) But here we are, finally
at the release date.

4.Known Issues
--------------
No known issues! Huzzah!

Please report any bugs, spelling errors, and such
on The Pantheon (http://donut.parodius.com/agtp)
Screenshots are preferred, as are savestates.

--------------------------
5.Application Instructions
--------------------------
Simply grab your favorite IPS patcher (my personal favorite,
LunarIPS, seems strangely apt in this situation) and apply
to an original Japanese LUNAR ROM. The patch should expand
the game to 8mbit (1.00 megabytes.)

It starts out pretty slow with a lot of walking back and forth but it seems to pick up by the third chapter and the dialogue is very well done. The frequent encounters would be more of an issue on real hardware but hasn't bothered me so far. Oh and the music is pretty great too, reminds me of Links Awakening at times.

I applied this patch, and the first code I was able to make was a debug mode code.

Pro Action Replay Code:
00c166:?? [05-10=Debug Options] [00-11=Acceptable Hex Values]

05=Map [warp anywhere in the game]
06=Phase [view every character picture in the game]
07=BGM [sound test]
08=Fight [go to any fight in the game]
09=
0A=Chara [view all the text in the game?]
0B=Point [show your current coordinates]
0C=Scroll [find a locations coordinates on the screen]
0D=Flag [turn on/off event flags in the game]
0E=Scene [Chapter Modifier]
0F=Demo [view the 'CG' backgrounds]
10=Level [Character Level Modifier]

How to use the code:
Pause the game and turn on the code. Then un-pause, and hit the 2 button to enter into it's menu, then turn the code off as needed.

I've tried to bring them up the real way, unsuccessfully.

Searching around the debug options I simply found those 2 menus.

I believe the digit was 254 and 255 was the 'flag' menu.

Hey guys!!
This is a great project. I used to be a huge fan of the Sega Game Gear and the Sega Genesis consoles (I have seen you guys don't work on the latter, but it still had some awsome games!)
I'll be browsing the forums seeking to play all those awsome games again. I've used several emulators over the years when I get hit by nostalgia, but it's great to interact with the people working on this.
Unfortunately I'm not a programmer so I can't help as a developer, but I can do my part with English to Spanish Translation. I do this as work, so I should have no problem helping you guys out with requests as the one in this thread... I can also help with italian and portuguese.
Great job!
