I don't think there is battery charging circuitry built into the Game Gear. If you are using rechargeable AAs, you need to charge them with a normal charger.

The AC adapter substitutes the batteries, it doesn't charge anything. So, you don't need to have batteries in to use the AC adapter.

You may use a rechargeable Game Gear Battery Pack / PowerBack if you want to carry it with you.

Rechargeable batteries can be used but will need to be recharged externally. The AC Adapter only provides power, there is no in-built charging circuitry.
