It is a matter of opinion :) Here's a typical answer:

Best: Wonder Boy III
Worst: Alf

I think Phantasy Star is most widely considered best and I agree to that.

Worst depends if you count hacks or unlicenced...
If you include even parts of a game, I name 20km biathlon in Winter Olympics 1994. Not that rest of the game were much better.

I would have to say Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap for best (closely followed by Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Alex Kidd in Shinobi World).

I don't know what the worst game is, but I'll say the built in snail maze game.

My best is a hard one. Can't pick between Fantasy Zone, The Ninja, Sonic 2, Wonder Boy 2 or 3.
Worst is much easier. F-16 Fighter.

I knew someone would like it lol. It doesn't have the best visuals ;)

Quite interesting that WB III: The Dragon's Trap and AK in Shinobi World are overwhelmingly viewed as the best games, and indeed they are!

Also interesting that in the sega8bit.com forum "tournament" polls, neither made it to the semi-finals.

I do actually have some plans for a voting system on this site (Non-functional UI exists here) but you really need a lot of votes to get a decent result. We are all tainted by what games we played in our youth, especially with the "worst" - because most people never owned the truly bad titles.

snail maze is ugly, but at least really enjoyable and playable.
exact opposite to scrubby games like championship hockey ^^

"Wonder Boy in Monster Land" is my personal favourite, although "Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap" is closely followed. It's extremely hard to pick though. "Sonic" and "Sonic 2" are also excellent games. As is "Asterix". And "Alex Kidd in Miracle World". And "Alex Kidd in Shinobi World".

Out of the games I owned myself as a kid, I have to say "Champions of Europe" is the worst. It's absolutely impossible to control the ball! One of the worst football/soccer games ever made .... I still played it a lot as a kid though ...

For sure to me the best game on Master System is RASTAN!!!!

I beat this game for hundred times and I never get tired!!!

Sorry for the kidding... Really good games are made for this system, is impossible to show one that overcome the others, but a simple list, Rastan, Danan, Power Strike II, Golden Axe Warrior, Master of Darkness, Sonic 1 2 and Chaos, Mercs, Space Harrier and so on....

But the worst I can say, 20 em 1 of TecToy, is simply a piece of sh*t

Why not by categories? Soccer, Rpg, Adventure...

Nobody naming Populous? That's my second fav after PS.
On worst list I'd add Afterburner, the gameplay is kind of pointless.

I can't believe people list Teddy Boy as one of the worst SMS games ever made. at my opinion it's a true classic! When I reviewed it here http://www.retrocopy.com/sega-master-system/teddy-boy.aspx I gave it 9 out of 10 and wrote:

I love Teddy Boy! I love his bizarre world with colourful backgrounds and strange enemies (ninjas and snails??) and weird physics where up gets you down, and going left makes you end up right. The box text calls it "a video dream", and if it's a dream, it's a strange one. The Teddy Boy world is probably where you end up if you eat those funky mushrooms or experiment with that oddly well smelling glue. But we don't need an explonation for all this weirdness. No story is necessary. Teddy Boy is just there, firing at his enemies that come out from their big dices, making sure he kills everyone before time is up. And it's fun!

I had this game as a kid, and I loved it. I was never able to finish all the 50 rounds though - I probably never got any further than round 20. That was of course until I read in the manual for the game (after I had started to understand some English) about the cheat that makes you able to select starting level. I was amazed by this when I found out about it, and was even more amazed that the manual told us about such a cheat. Back then of course I didn't know about the original arcade version of the game either, and I didn't know that it was called "Teddy Boy Blues" in Japan, and had different music (the same music as a real song with lyrics, called "Teddy Boy Blues"). I think both the Japanese and the Western music used in the game is awesome, and that the SMS version of Teddy Boy is almost as good as the arcade version, even though its graphics is a bit simpler and the bonus games have been replaced. And of course - as all games I played as a kid, the SMS-version holds a special place in my heart.

(BTW: why does text I write get changed? I've written "at my opinion", but when it gets posted it's changed to "at my opinion" ??) At = in

Totally agree! I bought Teddy Boy back in my childhood as a budget game and didn't expect much of it, yet received a lot of enjoyment from it.

For me, the best Master System game ever is Ninja Gaiden. Great graphics, great music, perfect controls.

I don't have a worst game, though.
