Modelling the Z80
Post Posted: Tue Mar 20, 2012 5:10 pm
Hello,
I'm modelling all of the components of the SMS, starting with the Z80.
would this be a good document to use to do it?
z80.info/zip/z80cpu_um.pdf
I'm not sure if the model in the SMS is some variant with different features or not.
Thanks

Modelling in what way? Emulating? 3D model?

The official Z80 manual is OK, but has some errors and omits the undocumented features (by definition, it is "the document"). The SMS CPU is a stock Z80, the GG one is slightly different.

Hey Maxim :)
By Model, I mean Emulate/Simulate. I want to create one using HDL.
So the document i've posted won't suffice? is the SMSPower wiki a more reliable source of info?

I suggest you go with the official manual and The Undocumented Z80 Documented, as well as trying to take in the multitude of information at http://www.z80.info/ . However, there are several VHDL Z80 cores already available and your time may be better spent on the less common parts like the VDP, perhaps.

hmm
as tempting as it sounds to use another core, this is more of a learning experience for me than anything else.. I should probably stick to my plan and build it from the ground up.

The reason i've asked is cause i'm just in the process for taking notes to use to build it. And i'm making a (very ugly) mindmap. i'd hate to miss something and have to edit it later, since i'm new to using mindmaps.

Well, whatever suits you, but I feel compelled to say that mind maps are nonsense :) If you're aiming to simulate a Sega console, I'd not waste time on generic parts if it can be avoided as there's far more work to be done elsewhere...

hahahha! i like the way it lays the info out for me. but it is a pain to create one...an art in iitself to make a nice one, it seems.

as far as making the Z80 goes, it's not that i don't agree with you, but i also haven't touched any microcontrollers since i've made a career change( no time for hobbies). and have to remember how things actually work. so i figured, how better to learn how things work than to make one yourself??

(OT)

If I'm doing that sort of diagram beyond what takes 5 minutes on a peice of paper, I go for yEd and have it perform automatic layouts for me.

Sorry, the captcha is a necessary evil to reduce spam; it'll go away after a few more posts. There's a button on it to get a new image if the one you have is unreadable.

Yeah,
I think I'm going to go with the T80.
I'll look it over, figure out how to include it in my project and start working on the other components
