Best RGB Lead for my SMS MkI
Post Posted: Mon Nov 07, 2011 12:06 pm
Or more to the point are there any really bad ones I should avoid? I just got myself a nice wee portable CRT with RGB SCART and I'd love to see my SMS in all it's vibrant glory. :)

I was thinking of just buying one from Rob Webb's site as he's been in the biz forever but I thought I 'd check with the experts here first...

Nothing wrong with the cables from Consolegoods. I have a few and they are built well and work as intended.

retro_console_accessories is another good source for cables. She trades on eBay, originally under the name 'pcenginesales'.

Thanks for replying. I remember retro_console_accessories. I bought an RGB modded N64 from her a while back and had lots of good communication. Thanks for jogging my memory!

No problem.

The MS looks gorgeous via RGB. This is mine running via component on a plasma TV:

Obviously no scanlines with this setup and I'm not spending $100's of dollars for a device to add fake scanlines. I don't game on the plasma anyhow, was just curious as to how it would look. My retro gaming is done on an RGB scart enabled CRT.

For comparison, here's how the MS looks on the same TV via composite:

Just horrible! Lots of colour bleeding and blurry pixels, yuck!

Wow. That's a massive difference. I'm definitely buying an RGB cable now!

I don't know how good your telly is at upscaling but that RGB output looks better than any other older console I've seen. I don't know but it even looks nicer than the Megadrive.

It depends a lot on what your TV does with the image to resample it up. However, RGB is going to be hugely superior to AV, much better than composite, and noticeably better than S-Video on any TV.

Yeah, my living room telly (LCD) is a Panasonic. I went for that brand as the upscaling seemed by far the best for my budget. Anyway, now that I've got a nice portable CRT upscaling is no longer an issue and the smaller screen compliments the low resolutions of my older consoles.

I agree RGB output is always nicer than any other SD standard I just haven't seen such a marked difference as the above before. :)

The TV is a recent Panasonic 50" plasma. Panasonic's tend to have the best picture quality when it comes to plasmas.

The Master System is hooked up via an RGB scart cable -> RGB to YUV encoder (CSY2100) and then into the component input of the TV. It's a 480p signal.

It does look wonderful, even better in real life as opposed to viewing a pic taken of it via my crappy digital camera.

As for the Mega Drive, it has one of the worst composite outputs around. Here's a couple of comparison shots of my Mega Drive running in RGB vs composite.

This time it's going straight into an RGB scart input of a CRT TV.

Night and day difference really.
