Master Everdrive (new SMS flash cart)
|
|
Just released here:
http://krikzz.com/mseverdrive.html Apparently the bootloader enables SG-1000 games to run on a US SMS! |

There's nothing special about running SG-1000 games on the US SMS; it IS designed to be backwards compatible with the older SEGA consoles. In fact, the Genesis also runs SG-1000 games; however, SEGA removed the older TMS9928 modes, so you can't SEE anything, but you can hear it play the music and sfx as it runs the game. |

It has the necessary graphic modes and so on, yes, but I'm told that the US SMS BIOS blocks SG-1000 games from running -- or more accurately, it blocks games that don't have a specific header at $7FF0 (or $3FF0, or $1FF0).
I don't know of any SG-1000 game that does have the necessary header, though of course there are SMS games running in SG-1000 mode that do have it, like F-16 Fighting Falcon. Nor have I seen any hacked versions that have the header added, though it sounds like it wouldn't be that hard for a technically savvy ROM hacker (i.e. considerably more savvy than me). I haven't tried running SG-1000 games per se on the Genesis Everdrive, but I've tried Korean SMS games (or Gam*boy, or whatever they are) that run in SG-1000 mode, and have seen exactly what you describe: the sounds of a functioning game, but no picture. |

I'd like to remind people that SG-1000 video mode games looks much better on a real SG-1000/SC-3000 than they do on SMS/MarkIII type hardware.
The original color palette is unavailable on the SMS/MarkIII generation and games looks noticeably different because of that. |

Absolutely. It's a shame, but I can't see myself buying a SG-1000 anytime soon, so this is the closest thing for most of us if we want to play SG-1000 games on real hardware. Some games look OK with the darker palette (Chack'n Pop), others look like ass (Bomb Jack) and a few even have mild gameplay issues because of it.
Of course, there are always the ColecoVision ports! We're approaching, what, a dozen of them by now? Those should have the right colors, though you'll have to deal with the CV joysticks. BTW, another all-Sega option is CrabEmu on Dreamcast. Great emulator, though there was a TMS9918 sprite priority issue in the last release. The new build fixes that and a bunch of other things besides, and looks very promising -- hope it comes out soon. |

| I've been using SC-3000 systems with RGB output to play SG-1000 games. | |

Yes, but as long as an SMS flash card DOESN'T require the header ITSELF, it will startup the SG-1000 game which will then play fine. So it's more like congratulating someone for not doing something stupid than for doing something smart. :D
I was trying various SMS and SG-1000 games on the MD Myth and the new SMS Myth to check if there were any noticeable differences as someone asked after hearing that the Genesis in SMS mode had "issues". I didn't notice anything other than games using the old TMS modes don't display anything. I rather like some of those old SG-1000 games - especial Drol - so I'm glad I can run those on my SMS via flash cart. :) |

Heh, BlueCrab was just asking me about what kind of state I thought the Qt (*nix only) port of CrabEmu was in so a release can happen soon. After I cleanup a few things and add a couple others there will likely be a release. I'm trying to get the Qt version close to feature parity of the OS X version. It might not make it all the way to that goal before release, but I think it'll be pretty close. |

OK, fair enough -- I didn't know that there weren't further issues once the flashcart OS was loaded, like e.g. executing a hard reset after the game is loaded (as is necessary for some games on the Genesis Everdrive) which I'd think would retrigger the lockout routines. From your post, I'm guessing that's not the case. Of course the other part of my enthusiasm is that this is an affordable and user-friendly flashcart which allows for more than 31 games at a time! I haven't used the Tototek cart, but I don't get the impression that it's as slick as the Master Everdrive.
Me too! |

Hey, that's great news! I'm very grateful to BlueCrab for continuing to support the Dreamcast, and Mac OS X PPC as well. |

| I was hoping to finally see one of these someday. Is there a way (or a version of one) that works with the Japanese 44 pin layout? I'd love to be able to play that retranslation of FM Phantasy Star on an actual FM capable SMS someday. | |

I have been playing with he Master Everdrive today and I can say its a miracle :)
You can easily upload code thru USB and even communicate live with the cartridge. I expect that in some time tools and emulators can be made aware of it so we can have debugging console running on PC and communicating with SMS code, etc. I stuck the whole SG/SMS library on a cartridge now and hope to work on adapting my "smsdump" to support USB output with a custom PC client. If this can happen then everyone will be able to dump their cartridge easily. |

It works on a Japanese Master System btw and with expansion port as well so you can connect it via a gender adapter,
(There was a few bug in the menu code but we got them fixed today and the OS is patchable, Igor should release an updated OS shortly) Having so much fun playing with it ! |

Oh, that's awesome news. I snagged one of those gender adapters for the expo port a few years back. I'll definately have to pick one of these up then. Thanks :) |

Hi, has anyone who has gotten the Master Everdrive and can test some games? Myself and another guy have discovered that several games either don't work or have a lot of graphics garbling.
For instance, Back to the Future 3 doesn't work on the Master Everdrive OR the Megadrive Everdrive on my Genesis. Games like Space Harrier and Home Alone have graphics glitches galore on my US SMS version 3010-c. However, they seem to work okay on the Genesis. Krikzz himself has a SMS II, and there's no glitching. Was something do you know updated between the original SMS and the Genesis/SMS II that might cause this?? |

Isn't it a problem of PAL/NTSC incompatibilities with some games?
Back to the Future 3 for instance only works on PAL systems. |

|
| Does anyone know if this works with a Tototek converter on the Mark III? | |
|
|
|
|
|
Yes it does!! I just recieved it today and I can confirm that the Master Everdrive works with the Tototek converter on the JP Master System with FM support!! These are the games that I have confirmed so far, Wonderboy 3 dragon's trap (Monster World 2) JP Phantasy star with Bocks English patch, and Meka game save transfered to the everdrive!!! :) California Games Casino Games Galaxy Force Game Box Série Esportes Radicais (BR) Golfamania Mônica no Castelo do Dragão (BR) Out Run 3-D Rampage Rastan Rescue Mission Ultima IV Vigilante After Burner Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars Blade Eagle 3-D Bomber Raid Captain Silver Kenseiden Lord of The Sword Power Strike Zillion II - The Tri Formation Rastan More testing soon! |

Okay, I just finished all my testing. To make this easy, the only game that wont work is Wanted. Every other FM game works with the Master Everdrive + Tototek Master System to MarkIII Converter + JP Master System. I repeat, Wonderboy III Dragon's Trap (Monster World II), JP Phantasy Star FM with Bock's patch works, Ys FM with the English patch works, and ALL OTHER FM games except for Wanted works. |

| sorry if I'm dredging up an old topic, but is this the definitive SMS flash/devcart, then? or is there any reason I would want one of the others that are available? | |

it's the best out there IMHO ... I have it for a month+ , never failed me and you don't need to connect it to the pc or use some special memory for the roms |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| I believe it is incompatible with some games, although it may be fixable in a firmware update. | |

Thanks!
Yeah, I saw Wanted doesn't run. Which is a weird title not to run. Are the games that won't run on it runnable on other flash/multi/whatevercarts? |
