| SMS Power closing.. |

SMS Power will probably have to close by the end of this month, due to hosting problems.
That is until I can either find a reliable new host or figure out a way to pay hosting.
(I added last month a banner to Liksang that should bring 10$ if an user click and buy stuff from them, but apparently it didn't earn anything as of yet.)

Well, I dunno about things, what about those burstnet banner and stuff, and where is smspower.org hosted exactly now?
And how much it supposely "cost"?
I guess the _main_ problems with getting it hosted somewhere, would be the roms, if the roms are locally available to public, that can lead to problems.
However if the roms are not hosted on the site, I dunno...
That could easily fix the problems (I guess make them available to private users could help, but I dunno, that still can bring legal and bandwidth problems but I dunno, let me know about spec of this)
Oh and currently do you actually pay hosting or you have someone who do it free and can't handle it anymore?

Well, how much will the hosting run on a monthly basis? You mentioned that JoseQ said that much bandwidth runs $30 for him, which he resells at $72. Was he saying he'd let you have it for $30, or would it cost you closer to $72?

Eh? You should have mentioned that earlier. I didn't click the ad because I already know about Lik Sang, but if I need something there's no problem with me clicking through here to get it, and I could recommend others do that as well.

I will personally subsidize at least part of the webhosting costs if that will keep SMS power online. $70 a month is a little steep for me, $30 a month I can do. JoseQ can charge it to my credit card. If it's going to be more than that, maybe that'll be close enough, and the rest can be dug up elsewhere?
I'm fairly certain any web hosting solution which can offer enough bandwidth will cost money, so may as well keep it with JoseQ whose ROM hosting policies are already known... no point in going with a new company who might decide out of nowhere that you can't have rtoms here anymore.

but i guess everyone around here knows lik-sang and their products..
if there's anything we can do to help.. ask us.. (or me.. if i can help..)
i would hate to see this great place closed..

I didn't know about Lik-Sang previously (otherwise I would have been clicking the banner Zoop). There are some items there I am interested in getting. Has anybody actually used them? Are they reliable?
Cheers ..

I've ordered some Playstation stuff from them in the past and they were pretty quick to deliver.

I'm not entirely sure what the hosting problems are... here's the situation as I understand it:
- You've been given free hosting in return for banners
- You get this because JoseQ is a pro-emulation guy
- Banner ads do not make money any more
- It's costing JoseQ approximately $30 a month for the bandwidth, at cost price
- He doesn't want to be paying for SMS Power
- It'd cost $72 a month at his standard rates, with him making money from it
- So it'd most likely cost about the same if you went to another host
- You can't afford to pay for it though
Some ideas...
You could get hosting from an emu site. I appreciate it's nicer to be independent, and in control. There's no way you'd get hosting for roms though. I'm glossing over the fact that Meka is not a legal emulator for various reasons...
Some would say that roms is what SMS Power is all about. I would say that the longer you've been visiting here, the less you'd agree.
Is there an issue with linking to mirrors? ie. would those links stop you getting hosting?
I wish I were in a position to help financially. I'm not.
Now you've stopped non-members downloading from the members area, will that make any noticeable difference to the bandwidth usage? You said 38% of the traffic is zip files, I presume that's 38% of the bandwidth, if it's 38% of the http requests then it's a lot more of the bandwidth. One fifth of that, allowing a bit for non-rom downloads, isn't a huge amount, I'd guess about 6% of the total.
Maybe you could set up an online donation thing. If Jason can get $20 for no particular reason (you may guess I'm not a great fan of the idea for FreezeSMS) you should be able to get some for having a great site and single-handedly supporting the Sega 8-bit community.
Finally, I find this news somewhat disturbing. SMS Power is one of the few sites on the net which I never want to see die.

Is the hosting problem primarily to do with the ROMs?
I have to say I know next to nothing about the logistics and economics of Web site hosting (all of the pages I have are on Freeserve, and attract <200 visitors per day - they cost me nothing) so forgive me if I'm just being ignorant. But if the bandwidth required by ROM hosting is too expensive, why not ditch them and maintain a minimal site with the valuable stuff (news, release info, forums, documents and S8-Dev)? SMS Power is (to me) the focal point of the Sega 8-bit scene and it would be a great shame to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Or is the bandwidth primarily taken up with people downloading Meka? A few mirrors should see to that, surely?

The truth is that you are good and sweet as a honeybun or one of the angels on Wim Wenders movies. Be a little meaner! make the roms section available only to registered users, discuss with other emu site mantainers to bann the SMS roms sections so "registration" to SMS power becomes mandatory if someone wants to emulate the machine! (And most of all: be selective about who can register an who has the moral solvence of a rat and therefore cannot register because they would realease them in romz pagez.). Or forget about the whole thing and just live a happy life, free of worries (I truly care more about your well being than about SMS power, and you have already done too many favors to everyone, so I guess if you retire I would be happier than having SMS power on-line). You are so good Zoop, and I am unable to help you (I am a kid using my parents computer and therefore I have no money of my own and my parents are too stupid to like the SMS and help you). I even want to cry, I swear I am fucking crying while I write this last few lines, do whatever you want Zoop, just try not to be too good, there are very few people who apreciates people like you and very few people will thank you for what you are doing (look what they did to Jesus, they fucking crucified him for loving everyone). Close the site if that makes you happy, I REALY MEAN IT. Just be happy and try not to be doing too many favours to people you dont even know.

I was about to order $60 worth of dreamcast stuff from them through your link just now, but I found out that the shipping for it was $31. Screw that, I would never pay $31 for shipping for something that small. Maybe that is why you haven't earned any money. They have a lot of nice stuff that I would buy, too bad shipping sucks.

The shipping is a little insane, though it depends on what you order.
Lik Sang is really best for when they have something that you cannot get anywhere else.
They do their best to keep prices low to make up for the shipping fees.

It is.

The whole idea is to make the roms freely available, just not using SMS Power's bandwidth. People who aren't registered users have to wait a while for the mirrors to update, that's all.

It's not a case of wanting to close the site, it's a case of having to. I think. (I am not Bock.)

About 500 megabytes of webspace would be needed, but what is mainly needed is free bandwidth usage.
