SG-1000 packaging variations
Post Posted: Tue Mar 07, 2017 12:48 pm
Hi all,

After scanning in my own complete set of SG-1000 box scans to SegaRetro.org, I've been looking through the different packaging variations, ie big box, small box with black border, small box with no border (also known as Type A, B and C).

The smspower.org files have been a big help, but when I go searching ebay and yahoo auctions for pictures of the variations I don't own, sometimes I find mismatches between the box type and the cart type (see attached examples)

There are a few possible explanations:

1. Sega specifically sold games like this back in the 80s, and these mismatches are legitimate alternative packaging variations that should be documented.

2. Sega sold whatever loose bits of stuff they could cobble together back in the 80s, and any mismatches between packaging styles were not intentional and need not be documented.

3. Children back in the 80s got confused and cartridges and boxes got mixed up as they shared games between each other.

4. Modern sellers are pairing loose carts with empty boxes and aren't aware of the mismatch.

Any thoughts or info would be appreciated.

A good resource, if a little old/obsolete, is:

Attached is a document I started working on a few years ago to track my own research. I haven't updated it in years and there's probably a handful of stuff to update. I have more data scattered, will look into it.
