Master System on Mega Drive

Hello, sorry for my English, I come from France
I already know that Mega Drive controller generaly work on Master System, but
can Master System controller will work on Mega Drive too
or like game we need only one button, like Sonic games on Mega Drive or Mega CD
for example, use it for second player in game like Sonic 3 or Sonic 2
and does it work for other game ?

Short answer? Yes.
Long answer? You don't get to use the A or Start buttons, obviously.
EDIT: Below poster makes it clear that I shouldn't rely on 12 year old memories. :)

I don't have any Genesis/MegaDrive so I can't test this myself but I was wondering if it's not going to mess up input. I mean, are the MD games aware that there could be a SMS pad connected? Because inputs from an MD pad are multiplexed and since SMS pad inputs aren't I would expect to see both B and A pressed when SMS pad '1' is pressed, or both C and START pressed when '2' is pressed...
