Unreleased game gear box-art - We're back and Beethoven
Posted: Mon Nov 27, 2006 6:14 pm

A friend of mine came across these in america, lucky git.
I've seen the titles pop up a few times on game gear lists around the tinterweb, but they were obviously never released. Still a damn good find though, i don't go in for the roms so i don't know whether they ever made it to the stage where a rom would be available. They may have just been very early artworks for future projects that got canned. |

Does the boxes have back? Showing screenshots?
Obviously we should ask HI TECH someday. |

It takes an awful lot of balls to say that we've been waiting a million years to play a High-Tech Expressions game. :-/

10 million years, even. Maybe the back of the box says "...and this is what you got?"
Just in case someone doesn't know, they're both movie licences: Beethoven @ IMDb We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story @ IMDb |

Hi-Tech's much like the dinosaurs on that box, I think. |

Sorry for the delay, the guy who owns the games has only just got back to me. Here are the backs to the boxes, aswell as another game Barbie - Super Model.
Its not fair, i want them! |

I wish those were high-res scans, then maybe I could tell if those were actually GameGear graphics.
Barbie looks almost exactly like the snes/genesis game (exept for the missing score at the top) Beethoven looks like it might be an actual GG game (but a port of the snes game) and for We're back, I can't tell if these are screenshots of the snes game or not. Overall (exept for barbie), if these are real GameGear screens, they've got pretty good graphics by gamegear standards. |

They look like real screenshots to me
Most gamegear games were released on master system, so dont take proper use of the gamegears extended pallette. But check out Game Gear games that didnt come out on Master System - like Markos Magic Football, and yoll see what the system is capable of (some look like lo-res megadrive games) |

The screenshots all look too high-res, and have the wrong aspect ratio, for the GG screen. If they were lazy SMS mode games, you'd be able to tell from the screenshots - they look too detailed and colourful to me, considering the source (ie. not a great Sega 8-bit developer). I reckon these are likely to be box mock-ups, as suggested in the very first post.

They are all too high-resolution to be Game Gear screenshots.
Try to identify a 8x8 tile (eg: font character) and count how much of them would fit horizontally.A Game Gear screen would only have 20 horizontally. There's much more. |

How on earth did he manage to get such stuff ?

They were won in an ebay auction along with another 200+ game gear boxes from a US store that was closing down, they just happened to be in there. Thats all he knows.

Followup on the story, I purchased that prototype.
"Bonkgamer" having very bad track record of shipping stuff, of course it disappeared in the mail (!!!). We have copy of the data left, including ROM, full source code and tools. The ROM is now available here: http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=49220 |

Brynaldo: could your friend provide higher-resolution scans of the three boxes along with (mockup) product number, if any/valid?

I wonder why they were using the older US box style?
Less sure about Beethoven, but I believe We're Back was a late 1993 release, for both the movie and the released games for SNES and Game Boy (which itself was a crappy game released under multiple names in EU :P ). Shouldn't that have been the purple stripe era? |

I suppose it should but whenever someone within a team quickly mockup something they don't necessarily go and ask SOA for the latest and right template and sets of publishing rules.

Beethoven?! That would've been a fun title to own, these boxes still floating around or are they pretty rare? |

"The game you've waited 10 million years to play"
Maybe the game will finally get a release in a couple thousands of centuries then :p |
