porting "Neko" to gg/sms/sg
Post Posted: Sat Jan 04, 2014 4:11 pm
i started to code a hybrid rom, a port of "Neko" ( http://webneko.net for some idea)
for now it's only a sprite test (just for taking a look how it would look like)
as well, it's just a test with 16x16 sprites instead of the original 32x32
the cat behaviour on the cursor i'll add in a next version, and upload it back here
neko_sgsmsgg_01.zip (18.96 KB)

Good grief, I remember that from the Windows 3.1 shareware days. Not a game, though...

By "hybrid" do you mean it detects the system and adjusts accordingly, or just that you're going to produce three versions?

no, the same rom for all 3 machines, without detections (which i actually don't know how to detect if the hardware is a gg, sg or sms) and adjustments, since it is black and white only, and all in mode-1 - what i did was using the colours 1 and 15 (sg1000), and getting sure that the palette of both gg and sms are black to 1 and white to 15 (not that hard, i think - the code shows how i tried to do that)

(for now the sms version is only for mark-3, because i didn't add checksum yet)

i actually tried on Mess on these 3 emulated machines, i think only sg1000 behaved weirdly (some accuracy bugs of the emulator, i think) - i opened them on each emulating machine via nautilus/caja script (linux), but i guess that some emulators are filename suffix sensitive (for each gg,sg,sms...), so renaming them could be enough for trying on all of them?

now, next step is putting the cat running behind the rat (rat moved by the control pad), scratching the edges, sleeping, etc., just like the original one! :)
