Loretta no Shouzou/The Castle
Post Posted: Wed Mar 16, 2011 8:02 pm
Why is it that everywhere I see "Loretta no Shouzou" is considered to be a Mark III game (including the games section here), while "The Castle" is considered to be a SG-1000 game? Both games are packaged as Mark III games (Gold Cartridge), but can both be played on the SG-1000 as well. So... What is the difference between the two games?

That's a valid question. However that consideration comes from their product numbering:

The Castle is G-1046 (fits in SG-1000 sequence)
Loretta is G-1315 (fits in Mark IIII/SMS sequence)

Also The Loretta no Shozzou is a larger, 1 megabyte game, which more accurately fit into the Gold Cartridge category.

That's amazing! I always thought that DaiMakaimura for the Supergrafx was the first game on ROM to reach 1 Megabyte.
...
Goes to show how advanced SMS/SG-1000 games were.
...
The game may have 1 Megabyte, but the graphics sure don't show it...

Oops sorry I meant 1 megabit =)

Although colors and animation/scrolling are a bit limited, there's a fair room to do nice graphics with SG-1000 type graphics mode. MSX1 games pushed the system pretty far whereas SG-1000 didn't.

Bock, will The Castle play correctly in a Japanese MS, or does it need to be played in an SG console to work correctly?

It plays correctly on a Japanese Master System / Mark III.
However the color palette looks better on a SG-1000/SC-3000.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Are there any screenshots available that highlight the differences?

Finally got around to answering my own question.

Same TV, same video cable, same cart etc - top pic is The Castle running on an Aussie SC-3000 and bottom pic is the game running on a Japanese MS.

Definitely looks a lot brighter and more vibrant on the Japanese MS.

Which SMS flashcarts (if any) support the extra RAM used in The Castle?

The color are terribly off on the Mark III or Master System. Look at the map or cross item.

Also note that The Castle is a late release so they probably consciously made sure that some combination didn't show too badly on the Master System.

Dragon Wang got rereleased with a modified color palette so that it would be more readable on the Master System, in the original build the flying knives were barely noticeable.
