Post in here if you spot any mistakes on the site and you can't fix it yourself.

I tried uploading a sprite to the site, but now the page shows a bunch of division by zero errors and I don't know what's wrong:

The image you uploaded, or an earlier version, is a bit funny, not least because in some places the transparency doesn't work. The sprite handler messed up on that and produced invalid data in the page. I removed the data from the page and it regenerated it from the image correctly.

I also uploaded a more valid image. What software did you use? I used Paint Shop Pro 7 (which thought there was no transparency set up) and then PNGOUT to reduce the size.

The transparencies were my mistake, it first looked like all was transparent in Paint.NET, but then I had to correct it a few times. The last version should have had the transparency alright, according to Paint.NET (and visually checked in IrfanView). I saved with Paint.NET and then also ran PNGOUT on the picture. Maybe the site doesn't adjust the autogenerated data when an image is reuploaded with changes?

Correct, it doesn't. Just delete the data and it will recreate it with the current image.

Lesson 1 - numbers
Post Posted: Tue Nov 02, 2010 3:05 pm
I was reading this tutorial and found a error here:
http://www.smspower.org/maxim/HowToProgram/Numbers

%10000110 / 10000110b is not 70.

(1 x 128) + (0 x 64) + (0 x 32) + (0 x 16) + (0 x 8) + (1 x 4) + (1 x 2) + (0 x 1) = 134

So the correct answer to that binary number is 134.

Well, it's not really part of the main site (it's my personal site) but I corrected it anyway :) It was a silly typo and it ought to have been clear to me that it must be >128.

in_vgm 0.35 broken in Winamp 2, 0.33 works fine
Post Posted: Fri Dec 17, 2010 4:25 pm
I still use Winamp 2.95 a lot since it's a lot less bloated of an app than Winamp 5.

I just noticed that in_vgm crashes Winamp 2 upon any instance of playing a .vgm. (In Winamp 5, in_vgm 0.35 works just fine).

I tested off clean installs both from Chipamp and the standalone in_vgm installer. If someone could let me know if they also experience the same issue, that would help me understand if it's just my comp (XP, Winamp 2.95 and 5.601) or an actual issue.

Not sure if anyone would be interested in compatibility with such an old version of Winamp 2, but figured I'd post and try my luck. Thanks for looking into it!

Hey Larry, remember me? I'm nineko :P

I prefer to use Winamp 2.xx too, and yes in_vgm 0.35 doesn't work anymore, so I am still using 0.34, which is the last version that still works in Winamp 2. It doesn't have 2151/2612 individual channel muting, but aside from that, it works just fine.

However I am using in_vgm less and less these days, in favour of ValleyBell's vgmplay.exe

It's a known issue, I'll try to take a look ASAP... right now it requires you to fill in your (full) birthday which it shouldn't.

Was the Master System-version of Sonic the Hedgehog developed by Ancient, while the the GG-version was developed by Sega? That must be a mistake.

Good catch! I updated both SMS and GG entries.
Although I'm not sure we have matches for the other names (apart from Matt Furniss) yet. Maybe ask Matt?

Article on The Kremlin:

http://www.smspower.org/Scans/SegaMasterForce-Magazine-Issue1?gallerypage=12

...but it seems to conflict (Trivial Pursuit has in-game credits for developer Teque London, for example). Matt Hicks is covered, the other Prince Of Persia credits aren't. I wouldn't expect Matt Furniss to have worked alongside the other people credited - Krisalis was based a long way away...

Are we sure Thinking Rabbits developed "Soukoban" for Game Gear? They published the original Soukoban in the early 80s, but isn't it more likely this Game Gear version was made by someone else (Riverhill Soft) Also Thinking Rabbits is listed on no other Game Gear-games

No we're not sure, but at least Thinking Rabbits is listed for copyright on the title screen. Maybe the fact that it is listed last suggest that it only licensed the game?

Yes, and maybe also that a specific year is not listed. Another Soukoban game (called "Shijou-Saidai no Soukoban") was released for Mega Drive the previous year, and the title screen for that game says "Original game (c) Thinking Rabbit 1983. Reprogrammed game (c) NCS 1989" so at least Thinking Rabbit didn't have anything to do with the Mega Drive version.

Hurricanes on the site is tagged with an Anime tag, however it is a cartoon is made by DiC (famous for Inspector Gadget) which was an American (originally French?) company and Scottish Television (famous for Taggart).

The tag should be removed from the game.

What do you mean by "custom"? "Heavily photoshopped"? I'm getting hold of the original raw scans but for now, I'm happy that they're accurate images.

I've been having a lot of trouble trying to post, edit posts, and edit attachments on the forums.

What happens most of the time is that even after clicking submit, I am still taken to the preview page where I can preview or submit again.

Likewise with attachments I can upload new attachments, but when I submit the post it reverts back to the old one. This is why I put files on my website instead and linked to them. Sometimes everything works, and I've tried IE and Firefox and logging in/out, clearing cookies, etc.

I can delete posts just fine, but something about submitting isn't really working. Any ideas?

Do you take a long time in the post writing screen ?

Try to begin a post and then submit it immediately, does the error occur then ?

There is help here: http://www.phpbb.com/support/srt/

I never experienced what you say. I use Chrome. (www.google.com/chrome)

Hmm, I think you are right. If I edit or write a post quickly this problem happens, but if I wait a while then it's normal. I guess I just need to slow down. Thanks!

There's a 5s or so timer on posting/editing between page load and submit, to act as a spambot filter. You get sent to the preview page if you submit too soon, but then the timer starts again. It's annoying when you are making a quick typo change, for example, but I imagine it helps with the spam.

If you attach to a post, you must use the submit button or the attachments get dropped.

In the Credits box in the right bar of Chuck Rock (GG)'s Game page, there is a dotted link to "Attach:ChuckRock-GG.png", even though that image exists in the standalone Credits page.

Attachments are per-group. When the credits are transcluded into the Games page, the link remains relative to the Games page, and there's no such image in the Games group.

The intention is that these images don't show on the games page anyway. Since the first 6 lines of the credits page are transcluded, the fix is simply to add some blank lines before the image. I ought to have checked that when I added the credits :)

The credits edit page says: "Make sure the screenshot/tags are not in the first 6 lines."

There seems to be something wrong with the RandomSprite Script and Factory Panic's sprites, it keeps on "filling in sprite stats", but the two big Gorby sprites don't seem to be edited correctly. Maybe it's because "(big)" is written in brackets and the script doesn't know where to add the stats?

EDIT: yup, that was it. I went through and renamed the two "(big)" sprites, and the script could correctly fill the stats for them.

Yes. In-game, both games currently linked to the company say "GAME LINE", AND this page mostly uses it with a space in the middle. I fixed the appropriate pages. We're likely to come across this sort of thing a lot as we manually enter data, so it's good to occasionally clean things up a bit.

Reading through the history section of the Oliver twins website (www.olivertwins.com), wouldn't it be more correct to say that Codemasters was only the publisher of "The Excellent Dizzy Collection" and that the developer was Interactive Studios? Interactive Studios was established in January of 1991, according to the site, and had its own employees working on the game. Not to mention - it even says on the back of the box Interactive was the developer.

Also it says on the site that Interactive Studios did the 8-bit versions of "Judge Dredd", not Probe, which did the 16-bit version - http://www.olivertwins.com/JudgeDredd It says "Master System" there, but I assume they mean Game Gear. That is also what the picture shows.

In the Game Gear scan section, there are some scans of the American "Mortal Kombat" box. These scans are actually of Mortal Kombat II, not the first game.

Nice. It still says Codemasters did the SMS version of "The Excellent Dizzy Collection" though, instead of Interactive Studios.

This interview may also be of interest: http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Interview:Paul_Hutchinson

It says there that Paul Hutchinson programmed, working for Sega of America, "SMS Spider-Man, GG Spider-Man, GG Chakan, and three GG X-Men titles, finishing off with the SMS version of the final X-Men (Brazilian market)." So Sega should be listed as developer for all those games.

It's a little surprising that GG Spider-Man was developed by Sega of America and published by Flying Edge...
