When I tried to register it said my name was already taken. Is this only for new members?

Question. Are people supposed to vote only, not to influence later voters, or is discussion encouraged? I mean, should I just vote "9" or can I also post "I voted 9 because it's awesome"?

Am I allowed to vote for my own entry? :)

It is traditional not to vote for your own entry.

When voting (for example on my entry) you should vote any number you like (for example 9) and then leave any comment you like (for example "this is awesome"), but it's probably best to avoid saying your exact vote. Discussion of the entry is good, discussing your precise voting is not. But you are free to do as you like.

Should you want to enforce that, you can check for that by looking at the phpbb_vote_voters table. That table contains a list of the users who voted on each poll. However, note that there is no way to know what the vote was, since that's not stored at all in the database (only the totals are stored) unless you altered some forum routines.

I wouldn't mind an auto-disqualify for self votes, to be honest. On the other hand, if everyone voted 9 on his own entry they should balance themselves.

We chose to remove the ability to see the current votes before you vote yourself. This allows people to vote based on their own mind instead of being influenced by others.

However, this means that entrants can't see the voting on their own entry (unless they make effort to bypass what we did). I think this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Is there any way to see the votes without voting (I do not want to vote on my own entry) ? On some forums I visit there's See votes (and lose your vote) option...

Like I said, I don't want to make it easy for people to see the votes before they vote themselves.
