Quite fantastic, it's fun to play. I'm normally not that great at these types of games but was doing quite well (on beginner difficulty, but I digress...)

The music is very catchy, did you use Mod2PSG or something custom to compose it?

On a NTSC SMS 1 it locks up after the "Bock Bock Revolution" screen, when it fades out and then the screen is turned back on (blue backdrop) but there are no sprites or music. It could be my dodgy setup though...

I need Bock to have a second birthday or SMS Power! to have another anniversary for some bizarre reason, so I'd have more time to finish up. :)

Well, if you can release Bock's birthday demo/game four months late I'm not going to beat myself up if I miss SMS power's anniversary by a few hours.

This is all very sexy!
Thanks guys. And thanks Maxim for the birthday present :~)

Those big text sprites are awesome. Now if only I could perform better on HEAVY.

Wish I would do some SMS coding... I still have that secret project starring Maxim as a super-snail in a giant labyrinth.

Maxim, I had the same result as Charles on a US SMS1. But, hey, I've never seen an SMS BSOD before. That was kind of cool.

I am embarassed to say I recognized the in-game music. I refrained from singing along, however. I want you all to know that.

Well, I'll have something to release tomorrow --- I could stay up late and finish it by "12:00a.m. Hawaiian Time" like last year but I don't have the stamina.

Congratulations!

8 years of SMS Power!? Crazy. Feels like just yesterday that I downloaded my first SMS emulator (Massage) and started reliving the joys of quality 8-bit gaming. It's great to see the legacy live on. Keep it comin'!

It's not a BSOD but I ought to put one of those in my next demo :)

I just tested it on my PAL SMS and it's much the same - some kind of lockup after turning on the screen for the game (blue background) and before anything else interesting happens. I'll debug it in about six months when I recover from the last weekend. The palette fade routines I copy/pasted from my 2002 demo aren't so hot either, occasionally screwing up colours.

I'll release it properly (with documentation, source, making-of documentary and original cinematic trailer bonus features on the second disc) soonish.

Did it crash? Was the screen blue? If you answered 'yes' to both these questions, then it's a BSOD.

No demo tonight, maybe tomorrow *yawn*

Big it up for SMS POWER!

This site is one of the most interesting and diverse tributes to old-skool hardware that I've seen over the past few years, made even better by the positive and genuine community support it receives. And all this for a system over 20 years old - now that's class :)

I guess the US Master System Release will have its 20 year anniversary soon. I can't believe it's been that long, I remember when it was new. I've played Quartet for 20 years and I still can't help but play it to the end whenever I start it up.

Hey, I am very very curious about that release! : ) Any news on this?

Maxim, I checked your game with SMSplusDC v02 and it runs perfectly! : )

Um, yeah, I was going to turn it into a Meka 6th birthday tribute instead but now I've missed that as well and I think I'll just go back to the original idea. If I get a chance I'll try to finish it tonight but if I don't make I can't work on it until the weekend, and now it's ridiculously late.

It involves a big number '8'. The 8 is pretty much the star of the show.

There's always old release dates to commemorate when your release slips. Coming up we have (all Japanese release dates):

5th (today): Gear Stadium (GG, 1991)
7th: The Quiz Gear Fight!! (GG, 1995)
17th: Solomon's Key (SMS, 1988)
19th: Rocky (SMS, 1987), Sukeban Deka II (SMS, 1987), Super Golf (GG, 1991)
22nd: GP Rider (GG, 1994), Megami Tensei Gaiden - Last Bible (GG, 1994)
24th: Hyper Pro Yakyuu '92 (GG, 1992)
26th: The GG Shinobi (GG, 1991), Doraemon Waku Waku Pocket Paradise (GG, 1996)
28th: Doraemon Nora no Suke no Yabou (GG, 1993), Pro Yakyuu GG League (GG, 1993), Tails' Sky Patrol, Tempo Jr. (GG, 1995)
29th: Great Football (SMS, 1987), NBA Jam (GG, 1994), Tanto-R (GG, 1994)

Not exactly a list of gaming legends but maybe something will take your fancy.

Am I the only one who's freaked out when the 8 lunges murderously towards me?

I'll release an updated version some time with bugfixes for various things that make it crash on real systems and too-accurate emulators :) I also want to develop my super-advanced PlayStation controller adaptor and driver code, so it will at least be after I manage to make my negative bank balance become positive :(

As for adding more tunes... it is 100% possible but it is too much work for me. Here's what's needed:

1. A tune made in Martin's Mod2PSG2, with a regular beat (no speed changes)
2. Step data like L,R,L+R,-,D,U etc
3. Knowledge (can be figured out easily) of how fast the music plays

And, of course, more work by me to make it faster to play (less intro screens) and a music selection menu. However, for me personally (1) and (2) above are very very hard. It took me several weeks to produce the music that is there, and that was based on an already-existing music file (and, as the readme shows, required a lot of fixing and editing). I have 0% musical ability. The step data is the actual data taken from some DDR sites, converted manually by looking at a PNG and typing in some codes for each step - which is a lot easier than trying to make well-balanced 4-difficulties step data for an original composition.

The most mind-destroying thing of it is having to listen to the same song, over and over again, for several weeks. It can really affect your sanity...
